I still llike PX's:

through legislation such as HR 2366, the Online Poker Act, which already enjoys bipartisan support.
I mean why thin down to HR 2366 and create "friction" since we know it's very likely that H. Ried will be introducing "his own" bill. It just sounds too dry, almost like an ultimatum.

The website is not ready yet. You can bet that when it is, Rich will have the link up and we will tweet and facebook and send emails with links to the petition to get the 5000 sigs.

We're merely stating that legislators have already given the issue considerable attention, I think. Not asking for this specific bill. That's how I read it anyway. I liked PX's changes, too, but I think what Rich has now is good.

Re: White House creates online petitions site - need 5,000 signatures

Is this petition being written for the average person to sign? Or is it being written for more sophisticated and knowledgeable players to sign?

If for the first I prefer PX’s modifications of my original post. He removed verbiage and made it simpler.

If for the latter, then TE’s version.

“In many states, American citizens can legally play poker in licensed casinos. We ask that the U. S. government license and regulate lawful businesses to offer this same game of skill and competition between individual players via the Internet.

Not to be confused with Video Poker where play is against the business, we are petitioning for U.S. licensing of Internet Poker sites that allow individuals from various locales across the U.S and beyond to test their abilities against each other in a fair and regulated manner, much the same as chess players, bridge players, scrabble players, etc.

Not only would this allow enhanced competition, but it would allow Americans to enjoy this American-born game without the extra cost of travel when gasoline prices are rising and a fuel shortage is of concern. In addition to the benefits to the individual player, recent studies indicate this simple act would bring three to four billion dollars per year in extra revenue to the U. S. government without raising taxes, as well as create thousands of new jobs in the U.S.

In most states it is already legal to play poker when players sit across a table and compete with each other. All we are asking is that we be allowed to take advantage of the Internet age and play the same game online in safe, regulated and licensed venues run by U.S. businesses.”

Any idea when they may open the petitions for us to sign?

While a launch date has not yet been announced, the White House said that it will go live "soon."
That's all we have so far.

The petition verbiage really isn't for us at all. The petition verbiage is focused on the recipients (President Obama and his administration).

Their view on your verbiage won't matter much if it ends up with 5,100 votes and the petition to legalize weed (in as many words) gets 5,100,000 votes.

Imagine the tax revenue the US would take in with both weed and online poker legalized. For the religious right it's OK to send young people off to die in the desert, but weed, online poker? Sinful.

There are so many people involved in politics with such backwards thinking and sheepish, reactionary tendencies. I mean seriouly think of the tax revenue with legal weed and online gambling. Are these two things so awful that it's not worth it?

theyre not sending kids to die in the desert for nothing; find them a plant or game that kills a buncha Muslims and they'll support legalization.

I'm obviously not planning to use verbiage players won't sign on to, but if our goal at this point is to convince players to sign rather than seeking to convince the petition recipients of the merits of our position, we're in some trouble.
