Best Chance Yet For Internet Gambling Bill Is 2012

“When you have a savvy, shrewd, dogged advocate like Senator [Harry] Reid is, anything is possible,” Allison Binney told tribal gaming officials attending the Western Indian Gaming Conference at the Morongo Casino in Cabazon, California.

“Senator Kyl is retiring. This is his legacy year,” Binney said. “There will be things he wants to get done, and he will need Senator Reid’s help to achieve those. So there is definitely opportunity for compromise.”

But Binney, who served five years as staff director of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee before stepping down in 2011, said thepartisan warfare in Congress during this election year makes it almost impossible to pass any bill, much less a controversial measure to legalize Internet poker.

“Kyl wants to make sure before he leaves office that there is not a hole ripped in the U.S. law [on Internet gambling],” Brierton told the WIGC audience.

Stevens and NIGA Executive Director Jason Giles expressed frustration that Reid still has not introduced an Internet gambling bill after circulating drafts of an Internet poker bill during the lame duck session in 2010.

NIGA helped persuade eight Democratic senators to sign a November 15, 2011 letter urging Reid to make sure tribal interests are addressed in any Internet gambling bill he considers.

“We’re on this, and we’re united,” Stevens said.
