NY Post source: A Reid bill will be introduced by end of session; Kyl may co-sponsor

Loading the dice: Kingpins bet feds will legalize online gambling

Quote:
Caesars Entertainment, the No. 1 casino operator in the US, became the latest power player to make a move when it filed papers this week to go public.
The timing of the move — a $531 million initial public offering was pulled last year because of poor market conditions — is meant to coincide with the anticipated introduction of a Senate bill legalizing online poker, a source close to the offering said.
Quote:
“A bill will be proposed by the end of the session,” a second source close to the situation said. “There is a 50 percent chance it will be approved by next year.”
Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.), who was once a gambling opponent, may co-sponsor the bill, several sources said. A Kyl spokesman did not return calls. There is a similar bill in the House of Representatives.

Apologies my title says bill could be introduced by the end of this year, but the article says end of the session.

I want to be excited, really. But if there's little hope wrt the super committee, then I just don't see it happening. This congress has been awful at getting anything done.

More than any other move, I think they're starting to seriously worry that if they don't act now then the states will and the feds will lose out on added revenue.

I'm not holding my breath, but it's nice to read positive news. I look at it as a fluff piece that makes me feel good with the possibility of even impacting me some day far away.

The potential of Kyl co-sponsoring has to be a pretty nice sign?

But the rest of the article talks about it getting passed this year.

IMO, the whole super committee thing was a sham. The whole thing was just a way to get cuts in military spending and social entitlement programs - the only real way to reduce the deficit - without the appearance of voting to make such cuts. The super committee was never going to get anything done.

At the same time, imo an online poker bill is a done deal. Congress doesn't suddenly have several hearings on something for just business as usual. The leaders know that it's going to move.

That's certainly part of it.

No, not "pretty nice". More like "fantastic!"

Would make sense Kyl getting ready to retire works on a "ghost bill" for online poker. Meanwhile he and Reid downplay the possibility of online poker. Meanwhile Ceasers issues an IPO that Kyl and freinds buy into. They pass legislation that stands to help make Ceasers a lot of money. Stock goes up Kyl has plenty of money for retirement. Ez game.

I've always thought the super committee was a joke also, but I think it's for absolutely nothing getting cut, since the next session of congress can easily repeal the cuts before they take effect in 2013, 0 chance they let defense get cut 500 billion or whatever it was, although since we're fighting like 13 wars or whatever, that stuff is separate from the budget so it probably wouldn't matter anyway.

I also think it's fantastic news, the 2 hearings on ipoker makes it a reality that they actually do something. Reid will introduce his bill in senate soon, if by some miracle it's co-sponsored by Kyl it's an auto pass imo.

i don't know about poker bills, but i just want to say that ive thought the super committee was just a pr move to make cuts to defense and social programs more palatable as well. nice to hear someone else who thought that may be the case.
