I wouldn't go that far. There could be a special session yet, called for January.

Florida Gaming summit : http://blogs.trb.com/entertainment/n...t_is_next.html
Kind of ironic it is being held at the Hard Rock, no?
Is there a possibility that something will come of this or is it just going to be a complaining session from the parimutuels?

Re: Florida New Poker Limits - SB 788.
Partially off topic, but have you seen the latest PPA Florida member newsletter?
I have just returned from my first ever visit to Tallahassee, and I am pleased to report that I had a very productive and successful visit to your state capital. Along with our Florida lobbyist, Gus Corbella, we met with leaders...
As the Florida legislative session nears next spring, we are awaiting the results of a legislatively mandated study which may make recommendations as to how online poker could potentially be regulated by the State of Florida. We remain committed that, if regulation is to take place in Florida, it must ensure competition and not monopolies.
Glad to hear they visited, have a lobbyist, and understand the importance of "competition and not monopolies."

Here's a picture of one of the video blackjack machines that are coming to South Florida:

I got the email from PPA. I am not sure what they expect to accomplish with a visit to the members of the Florida Legislature.
Today they see poker as GAMBLING. It will only bring more family breakups, bankrupt more people and cause much higher crime rates.
We see poker as a game of skill to be enjoyed by all, like bowling or golf.
To make the change of perception and get the kind of legislation we want will take a grass roots revolution. We need hundreds of thousands of voters to demand the change and millions of dollars in contributions to to get the change in law.
This issue is not very important to the Florida Legislature because not enough people and money are behind it.

Re: Florida New Poker Limits - SB 788.
Legislation to license and regulate online poker in Florida will be introduced by the Florida legislators in the next year or two. The only question will be if they legislate open access to both in-state and out-of-state sites (including foreign-based sites), or if they make it intra-state online poker only. The PPA is lobbying for the former.

It may be introduced but IMHO it has a 0.00% chance to pass. Florida cannot license in state sites only. Out of state sites must have equal opportunity to operate. This opens the door to big problems.
How can the state be sure that players money is safe? How can the state be sure that players and sites are honest? (UB, AP and FT come to mind) How can the state audit all of the above? Last but not least what government or agency can the state go to if a site misbehaves? I don't think they will trust a 12 member indian board in Canada.

"No one has agreed to a special session at this point to address the [Indian gambling] compact issue," said state Rep. Bill Galvano, R-Bradenton, who was the chief negotiator for a gambling deal in the House this summer.
There will be a November committee meeting to discuss the issue and whether the whole proposal should be allowed to die on the vine. The meeting is also intended to send the Seminoles the message that the Legislature won't budge on its proposed deal.
"That's the message I've tried to convey for some time now," Galvano said.
|
Quote:
|
Galvano said he wants the Seminoles to know he's ready to let the federal government carve out what the Indians are allowed. In return, Galvano said he would then focus on putting a new gambling bill without the Seminoles in the picture - one more helpful to the thoroughbred industry.
|

But Gulfstream lawyer Marc Dunbar said time is running out and that if a deal isn't struck now, the chances could drop considerably after 2010 with the incoming House speaker.
Future House speaker Dean Cannon, R-Winter Park, opposes an expansion of gambling and is unlikely to support resurrecting the issue in 2011.
In addition, Dunbar thinks that neither the House nor the Senate would be willing to take up the gambling issue during an election year.
|
Quote:
The problem with exclusivity, Dunbar said, is that most voters want a level playing field where both the Seminoles and non-Indian casinos have the same gaming privileges. The closest thing to a level playing field may be possible only if the deal does fall apart, he said.
"This is very much a game of poker being played between the Seminoles and the Legislature," Dunbar said. "Until one blinks, you won't know who wins."

Re: Florida New Poker Limits - SB 788.
Well, this certainly is depressing news. However, (and forgive me if this question has already been answered) but if no deal is struck with the Seminole Tribe, then don 't the new buy-ins take effect anyway?
My understanding was that as long as the Governor struck a deal with the tribe by Aug 31st the new buy-ins would take effect regardless of how the final deal actually looked.
Am I wrong?
Many thanks.
P.S. Government helps nothing, it only impedes the voluntary interaction of others. (Just my two cents)

No, uncapped poker only goes into effect if the whole compact deal takes effect. Without the compact, all the other gambling law changes in SB788 are null and void. See the OP ITT if you need more info.
