Let states legalize online gambling to stimulate the economy

Quote:
According to some estimates, legalized online gambling could contribute up to $150 billion to the American economy. Therefore, it is a highly attractive prospect that has garnered increased media and legislative attention in recent years with several bills introduced in Congress and about half a dozen states considering legalization on an intrastate basis. And the best way for Congress to stimulate states’ economies while respecting state sovereignty is to repeal the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), and instead allow states to legalize and regulate online wagering how they see fit. A state-based system would promote regulatory competition, strengthen states’ independence and self-sufficiency, and result in far more economic stimulation and job creation than a federally regulated market.

Online Poker: Towards a new tax law for France

Quote:
This amendment already adopted by the Committee of Finance aims to modify the Act of May 12, 2010 which covers the replacement of the tax recovery on the bet by the tax on the gross gaming revenue (GGR), which is as reminder based on the bet of players and their earnings.

Maryland governor wants Web poker off the agenda
Quote:
Maryland's governor is asking Washington D.C., lawmakers to take the proposed legalization of Internet poker off the discussion table because he fears online gambling could destroy his state's lottery.

In a letter to Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., and Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, co-chairs of the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction -- the so-called congressional "super committee" -- that is looking at ways to find some $1.5 trillion in federal debt savings, Gov. Martin O'Malley said he opposes federal legalization of Internet poker.
...
O'Malley said federalizing Internet poker would widen state budget deficits and threaten any economic recovery.

Now nobody really wants to die from flesh eating bacteria, and with odds at about 1 million to 1, the chances that you will die that way are pretty slim. Then again, you are 18 to 120 times more likely to die this way than to win the lottery.

I won't quote LVRJ articles, but he wants to eliminate the competition for the state lottery and slot parlors. Because that money goes to the children, and won't somebody think of them?

I wish I could find a study showing how many poker players play the lottery/slots, or better yet, how many lottery players and slot parlor denizens would quit to play online poker instead. My gut reaction is there's not a whole lot of cross-pollination occurring between those groups.

So did mine. I was very polite, too. But at least, let's hope he read it. I wonder if there are any resources to make a study into this, since it seems to be a, recently, popular argument (I got a similar response from my representative as well).

I feel like we're little league children on a baseball field watching the parents, coaches, and umpires arguing over a foul ball. We don't really care about the call, we just want to play.

Awesome analogy. Excited about the shadow bill. Sneak it in somewhere soon, Harry! Most likely, and quickest way to get something done for us, a win win (politically)!

Second. That's an important enough situation that every poker player in Maryland should be contacting the governor, their senators, and their representative.

On top of that, all of Maryland should get a daily action plan bomb!

You can always do a PM to a mod or a post report. I wasn't around after to reverse it, but am happy to accommodate such a request.

The article thread is a containment thread since there used to be way too many individual threads thrown up every time an article got published. If one turns into a hot topic, it's easy for a moderator to break out the discussion from this thread to its own. Just make a polite request - a post report will probably get the quickest action as all mods get it; a PM next; or a post like yours in the thread will been seen last as it has to wait for a mod to mosey along and notice it.

(slightly old) SB 40 Article:
http://www.sacbee.com/2011/10/11/397...unch-free.html

First comment:
"Cocaine and heroin dealers make the same offer."

I wanted to reply:

How does poker compare to "cocaine and heroin?" Because 1% of gamblers become compulsive? In fact, this one of the reaons why poker players seek regulation in the first place, for consumer protection which is currently lacking in the offshore unregulated market.

Signing in through my fb or twitter seems shady. Anyone have a SacBee or Disqus account that would write up my or their own response?
