3. What will it take for NV residents to get access to whole poker networks like PokerStars.
4. Has anyone ever seen an online site as bad and the one offered by SouthPoint?

1. For actual operation of real money, I still think it will be a "Live Date" sometime in the 4Q 2012.
2. I have been told that it will be intrastate, but that the regulators will be interested in expanding that as may be needed. Therte is a reason why they retained flexibility.
3. Expatriation, for now.
4. Reportedly, South Point is writing an entirely new poker software, something other than Zen, .... which is somewhat surprising as there are proven software soultions they could buy or license.

Re: Whats going on with Nevada online gaming?
Is it possible that NV could pull off something like intrastate poker, but still somehow allow international players?

I think neither Mr Gaughan or his tech guy have a clue as to what is involved in producing a top of the line site. If their first attept is any indication of their depth of understanding then South Point Poker will miss a great opportunity while they spend the years necessary to develop something that barely competes with existing technilogy let alone leads it.

Re: Whats going on with Nevada online gaming?
Those guys at South Point are pretty sharp. They run one of the better sports books in town and most of what I have heard about their live poker room is that it is pretty well run too. I can speak for the sportsbook, but not the poker room as I don't play much live poker.
As far as online rooms go when it launches it will be hard for the little guys to compete with the big guys anyway. You have seen Stations Casinos already partner with MGM in it's Bwin venture. I suspect other small guys like Coasts Casinos and South Point will need to jump on with other smaller names to get their foot into the industry. It will be very interesting to see how it all shakes out, BUT it is hard to imagine more than two or three major players when the dust settles and that will be MGM, Caesar's, and probably Wynn.

Re: Whats going on with Nevada online gaming?
We knew it was going to be Caesars, MGM, and Wynn about 6 years ago.

Great question/idea. I'd be very interested to hear opinions from those who are more in the loop on this.

The real issue should be making sure BOTH Senate candidates are pro ipoker, and pro-pooling. But, Nevada players don't seem seriously engaged.
Edit: is her house seat in LV competitive? It would be a good place to show visibility.

1. Nevada will definitely be in play in the 2012 Presidential election. (Ohio is far from a lock for Romney for one thing.)
2. Berkeley's House seat will most likely go to Dina Titus (D), who is on board already.
3. Nevada players are invisible so far, BUT Nevada casino interests, who aside from MAYBE Sheldon Adelson want igaming, are very active.

See, post 10 above:
"[M]y personal view is that it can. While there may be a challenge, I do not think it would be successful in stopping international pooling.
However, whether it will occur through Nevada's current structure is a separate issue, dependent upon what the Nevada Gaming Commission decides to allow.
As always, a lot rides on the impact of some political issues, like the importance of Nevada in the 2012 Presidential election."

I can't imagine NV serving int'l players would sit well with foreign providers. I wouldn't mind seeing it happen just because it might stir the pot up.

Cybersecurity at issue as Gaming Policy Committee discusses Internet gambling
"...Online security strategist James Elste, principal for INOV8V CyberCQRT, told the advisory committee that his company was one of 27 finalists out of 186 applicants for a federal grant through the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Up to eight grants are expected to be awarded in several aspects of cybersecurity.
Elste hopes his company gets $2 million a year for two years to develop the gold standard for Internet gambling security."

No. That's what they want but they aren't sandbagging. They are taking the regulatory development and site approval process quite seriously to set the industry standard. They want to be the industry regulatory leader, which means doing it right - unlike the foreign licensing authorities like Alderney and Gibraltar, whose lax standards and regulation have led to all sorts of fraud, bots, cheating, theft, etc. on their licensed sites.
However, it is possible imo that Reid has been sandbagging - waiting for the NV regulators and casinos to get to the point of cards in the air before pushing his federal online poker legislation through.

Re: Whats going on with Nevada online gaming?
That is a pretty slick move by Reid if that is the case. It could make a federal waiting period for establishing regulations pretty short, and really punish NJ for dragging their feet. Also, I think having a working state model will be a major incentive to get things passed at a federal level.

Very very good points, PX. You show an astute grasp of some of the politics at play from Nevada's perspective, from thousands of miles away. The twin paths you describe are not mutually exclusive.
Your scenario is certainly plausible, and expect a federal, pro-Nevada push in the fall.
