Thanks for setting this up for us to follow through with. Good job, everybody! (I didn't "like" the comments that were downright nasty, but there were only a couple on Bachus's page.)

I'm pleasantly surprised that he said, "while the people of Alabama have generally been opposed to gambling, I understand the points you raise in your correspondence in support of legalizing Internet gambling." He even mentions H.R. 1174.

(I never advocate for online "gambling" by the way. I only ever advocate for online poker.)

May be worth a follow up to distinguish...

If Barton bill is going to be the focus, it may be useful to work on messaging around poker as a game of skill.

BTW, what is legal status for bridge, backgammon etc. for money?

Legal in several states.

Edit: Betting on horses is legal in 32 states, 28 of which the age limit is 18.

I broke my leg eight weeks ago. Cast is off past two weeks. I am starting to walk again. Friday 6/17, I will limp into Congressman Barletta local office to support internet poker.

If I can limp , you can email.

All these places we can help our awesome. This daily "fight for poker rights'. I've never seen that before and I think a lot of supporters probably miss it also. On PPA facebook, I always click the "take action" button.

Please make this daily "fight for poker rights" more visible, and I think more people will take action!. Thanks G.A.

This is a letter I am thinking about sending out to the local papers. I have never written anything to send out before. Just want to see if there are any suggestions to add, take out, or change anything. This would be going to papers in Washington state.

Thanks

Dear Editor,

Washington State needs to look at licensing and regulating online poker as a new source of revenue. Our state is already very pro gambling, ie multiple lotteries, scratch tickets, pull tabs, horse racing and casinos, yet we strengthen laws that make online poker a Class C felony, when it is fine to play down the street at an Indian casino with none of that revenue going to the state. We need to do away with the criminalization of online poker and turn toward licensing and regulation. This would allow a new flow of revenue into the budget at a time when we are cutting essential services, ie. police, firemen and social services programs. Licensing would keep sites legitimate by running background checks; providing rules to keep games fair; audits; and investigation into complaints. This would protect players, people with control problems, and keep out underage players. The horse racing industry already has this in place, and it is working. Poker is a honorable game of skill that has been played around a family table for generations. It put one's experience and knowledge against another's to see who wins. If we have to keep accepting cut's in the state budget, then no new forms of revenue should be ignored including online poker. This industry has the potential to create jobs, and bring in an estimated 42 billion dollars over 10 years at state and federal levels. You should have the freedom to play the game in your own home as a consenting adult making your own choice. We need to be looking at restoring our personal freedoms, while helping out our economy in this trying time right now. It's a win win for both government and players.

It's Tuesday, where are the updates?

Tuesday & Wednesday plan:

Let's continue contacting mainstream media to ask them to increase coverage of our issue. Let's contact Fox News again. As they ran the article last week on this issue, we now something to which we can point. In other words, we can write, "I applaud Fox News for running the article on June 4th on the online poker shutdown and for the John Stossel special on the broader online gaming issue. I encourage you to keep covering this important issue."

Contact info:
Recurring actions:

Let's continue to own a lot of Facebook pages (senators, Congressmen, Congressional committees, etc.):
  • The House Financial Services Committee's Facebook page is here.
  • Let's get some posts on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce page (here)
  • The Dept. of Justice's page is here.
  • Senators' FB pages: Senator Facebook Listing
  • We need lots of posts on the issue of poker and lots of "liking" of pro-poker comments.
Let's all send the PPA pre-written letters to our lawmakers. These will be updated when Rep. Barton's poker bill is introduced to the House (in other words, soon), so let's all get the current letters out before that. Once done, please reply ITT with "done", "sent", etc. to encourage others. Thanks!

Finally, let's recruit others. Our personal recommendations of this effort will go far. The daily action plan takes very little time and there's no denying it's way +EV for the time invested. Once done, please post here that you made the request, along with posting your personal commitment to participate in the action plan.

Thanks!

Sorry I can't find it in here (very long), but is there a permanent link to this thread? The name of the thread changes frequently, so I don't think the default link will always work. I'd like to try to get my friends who aren't poker pros able to have just 1 bookmark and execute the daily action plan when they have time. I think they're more likely to help if they don't have to search a forum they wouldn't normally be on....

PPA website doesn't seem to have the daily action plan on it either.

thanks,
-Highland5

Thank you for recruiting friends to participate. That's very awesome! I definitely wish to help you here. I just created a short URL that should help with sharing: http://******/takeaction

Also, the default link always works. It redirects with the changes to the daily thread. For example, http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/57...-plan-1037109/ still goes to this thread.

That's because it's not a PPA action plan. Rather, it's a community action plan. PPA has an action plan at www.theppa.org/takeaction.

I may have them include this plan in the PPA action plan.

Thanks for the quick response, TheEngineer. I'll recruit who I can to help out. It's nice to have something to do every day. Redirect my anger a bit, then rewrite it before "send" so it is more friendly . I'll bet I can get at least my mom and wife to do the daily action more than just once.

thanks,

Good job sir. FYI there is a forum-wide announcement that links to this thread. It is in the Announcements section at the top of each forum page.

If anyone has any contacts with wealthy poker enthusiasts like Laker's owner Jerry Buss, or "The Simpson's" producer Sam Simon, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey MacGuire etc. they might be willing to put up the money for a large billboard in Times Square, or along the beltway in Washington D.C. I think that could have an impact. The billboard might have a picture of many smiling men and woman PPA members and might say something like:

We the PPA believe the following regarding US poker regulation:

1) absolute honesty and visibility in our sport

2) strict age enforcement policy

3) at least 2 members of the PPA on any gaming regulatory body.

4) substantial resources spent on sensible gaming education.

5) Poker would be a good source of much needed income for our government.

6) The time had come for the All American game to be regulated.

7) Let's do it.

Then you can send a picture of the billboard to all media outlets and tell them where the billboard is located. They then might place the picture of the billboard on the cover of their papers or magazines and do a big story on it. A picture is worth a thousand words.
