The following facebook comment thread is from last week, so no need for further responses. I just want to say that when people post anti-poker comments like this, I like to respond to them because their arguments are usually pretty easy to refute. It probably won't change their minds, but it provides a response for anyone else who might read it.

I still think its a mistake for us to make arguments like "lots of professional poker players lost their jobs" etc since most don't recognize gambling as a legitimate profession. Making this argument just leads to more dumb arguments about whether or not gambling as a job is a good idea, ie "but how much did you lose?".

And thats unnecessary, there's no reason to get into an additional fight about whether or not its possible to make a living playing poker. We accomplish nothing, and just open ourselves up to additional criticism.

We could make the exact same point and leave no room for that refutation by instead mentioning the software developers, marketing executives, etc who's jobs were sent overseas. By making this argument, you turn the conversation away from gambling and instead into middle-class jobs with salary and benefits.

there are lots of careers in poker that don't require playing, many people here tend to forget that and focus on the players. But in stupid facebook arguments, that is often a big mistake and just makes you play right into their hands.

+2 rollwave...good points, especially re: the non playing jobs this will bring. And about not really trying to push the "pro player" idea. We know they exist and how they got there( lots of study, work, and trial and error) Now is not the time to educate the population as a whole on making a loving online.

Re: Tuesday Action Plan: Let's tell NJ Gov. Chris Christie to support poker!

Tuesday, April 24, 2012

Let's keep telling lawmakers to support our rights and make sure they know we'll never fold in this fight. Today's action:
  • Let's sent tweets in support of NJ's proposed state legislation (S 1565) HERE and HERE. Let's also post to Gov. Chrisite's Facebook wall with pro-poker posts HERE.
  • Let's thank three new cosponsors of HR 2366 on Facebook! Rep. Mark Amodei R-NV HERE, Rep. Frank LoBiondo R-NJ HERE, and Rep. Adam Smith D-WA HERE.
