PPA August Update

The big news in the past month, of course, was the introduction of legislation by Congressman Joe Barton (R-TX) to license Internet poker. HR 2666, the Internet Poker Freedom Act of 2013, mandates strong consumer protections while setting up a regulatory framework to promote competition among sites. Be sure to view the full bill and PPA’s press release applauding introduction of this legislation.

I am very enthused by this new bill. For one, this bill, along with Congressman Peter King’s (R-NY) bill to license online poker and online casino-style gaming, ensures we will remain on offense in Congress. As I mentioned last month, this should also help push state efforts to license online poker. One reason is that many states will not want to risk losing the right to offer the game as a result of federal action, as happened with sports betting. Another benefit at the state level is that stakeholders who have not yet come to agreement are now looking over their shoulder and may be drawn into coalitions by continued Capitol Hill attention to this issue...
