Reid backs bill to legalize online poker

This Las Vegas Review news article has a couple interesting quotes:

Quote:
...
"Sen. Harry Reid is seeking agreement with vital players in Congress to attach an online poker bill, potentially within the Bush tax cut bills," said David Bain, a leisure and entertainment analyst with Sterne Agee.

Bain said major beneficiaries of an online poker bill would be Caesars Entertainment Corp., which has been vocal in its intention to further monetize its World Series of Poker brand.

MGM Resorts International also possesses a database of almost 60 million people and is a well respected and a trusted gaming brand, Bain said.

MGM openly supported Reid's re-election. Recently, CEO Jim Murren said that if Reid had lost re-election, an Internet gaming bill "would have been DOA for a decade."

Blog article on ESPN: http://espn.go.com/sports/fantasy/bl...r-legalization

Interesting quote from the blog article:

Quote:
So the first question that came to my mind (and perhaps yours) was: Where do PokerStars, Full Tilt, etc., go for the next two years? If the bill passes, this is going to be the most interesting debate and BJ Nemeth offered up in his blog this morning that they could go out and buy or merge with a casino to take care of this requirement.

You have to find a state regulatory body to approve your license if you are Stars and Tilt and want to buy a casino. Could happen, but its far from a slam dunk.

Look who is going to want to play on FT or Stars (other than a SNE) if MGM or Harrah's sends a 100% deposit bonus letter to every 20-50 year old male or convention goer that ever stayed in their casino/hotel in the last 5 years. Fish Alert!

Saying '0%' was troubling because it's a little defeatist. It it were true, it would have been fine with me. However, at the time it came up, we were not dead in the water. There was at least a challenger to Bachus for the HFSC chair, and three new committee chairs had not yet signed that letter to Reid arguing against legislation allowing online poker.

Bachus' apparent victory in the race for the HFSC chairmanship and that letter are clearly unfortunate, but I still wouldn't put us anywhere near 0% (though I'd readily concede we're underdogs in the next session of Congress, of course).

I am happy that Bachus heard from us in his fight against Ed Royce for the HFSC chairmanship. At least he knows we'll push back.

Yes, as I understand it they have been.

I agree with your conclusion today that if we dont pass legislation in the lame duck we are basically not getting a good bill any time soon.

Wow. I just can't believe it all comes down to this. If only we didn't have GOP house starting next month, we would't be so nervous about Reid succeeding this month. For 4 years I've been snooping this forum on a near daily basis and it comes down this. wow.

My first ever 1 time!

I live in Texas, sure hope I don't regret it and this huge state gets into the pool, otherwise, it would REALLY suck!

I won't speak for others, but this bill is a pretty big deal for me personally. I was planning on being done with online poker in June when UIGEA was finalized only to realize things were to remain stable. After the hearings in July I decided to remain pro for the rest of the year. Basically if this bill works I will continue playing, if it doesn't I might remain a professional for but a year, probably less.

I'd imagine many are feeling the same way. This is pretty crucial moment for online poker and I hope it works our way.
