so if sports betting blows up, the risk of point shaving becomes real and the team owners and the league commissioners will have to make the decision to pay the lowest-paid team members enough money to keep them honest, as well as setting up procedures for investigating point shaving. all this will cost money that they'd rather hoard for themselves, and that's why they're lobbying against it and filing this lawsuit, so a handful of guys can hold onto more of that precious precious money.

Because they think if sports betting is legal, then it will corrupt the games. They obviously ignore the fact that banning something does not equate to eliminating it from the face of the planet...or that if it was universally legal, then catching game fixers would be much easier.

They care because gambling on sports has been the cause of many sport scandals. If they just want their cut, they would support sports betting, not fight it tooth and nail like they have for decades.

Pretty sure the league minimum in mlb is 6 figures....and well into it, I want to say it is close to 400k. I have few friends that are/were in the bigs.

~3k a game. Not everyone gets called up for the entire year though.

i meant 'leagues' to include the NBA and NFL. every sport would have to implement or raise minimum salaries.

My last statement I am more confident in.....that being said, I am pretty sure when a player gets moved up to the bigs, they don't get paid on a per game basis, they have to sign a major league contract, the minimum amount of time on that contact I am not sure of, but pretty confident it is not a per game basis and I want to say it is on the rest of the season basis.....if not longer (one year from signing).

Of course this varies widely in how good a certain player's agent is. But it is pretty common for AAA and AA players to be on major league contracts. Otherwise, they (the minor league players) make next to nothing and the best players are living off their signing bonus from the draft.

But then again I could just be talking out of my ass...... carry on....go NJ!

Players on the 40 man roster with less than 3 years service typically get paid the MLB minimum when they are on the 25 man roster or MLB DL. If they get sent back to the minors, they get way less than the MLB minimum, but more than if they weren't on the 40 man roster.

Why don't they put a 10k cap on sports betting per team. This erases the chance to cheat and lets the every day joe watch more games and bet when they want.

The concern of the leagues could easy be avoided by simply putting the heftiest fines on folks that cheat.

Like throwing a player in jail for bunch a years and excluding them from any sport league membership and salaries.

Any player/official that fixes a game would at the very least get blackbooked. Shoeless Joe Jackson was found out to be innocent, but nearly 100 years later he is still ineligible for the HoF. Pete Rose bet on games as a manager, and he isn't ever getting into the HoF as the all time hits leader.

I'd guess that it would be illegal already. I know Tim Donaghy went to jail and will be in debt for the rest of his life because of fines, but hat might just have been for illegal gambling. If it was regulated universally, there is no way it wouldn't be highly illegal.

Additionally, it was back around 1999-2001 time frame when Murdoch owned the Dodgers he had licensed the logo to online sportsbook in I believe England in exchange for stock, the Feds did not approve of this and he later made some kinda deal over that.

Been a long time now and sketchy on the details from memory, there was a story back when on I think EOG or Major Wager about it around the time of UIGEA passage.
