These FoF guys are creationists. You aren't going to persuade them with logic.

Re: Focus on the Family taunts poker players
FoF taunting undermines their credibility, not ours. We would be better to point out their taunting and use it as evidence that the FoF is vindicative, abusive and has bad manners. This mocking tirade paints the FoF and illogical, nasty, immature and overly moralistic. I think that that PPA should reprint it in its entirety and use it in a future email and lobbying efforts. There are people out there that think the FoF is full of polite church goers, which sadly is not true.

Agreed, many of these people are just narcissistic sadists with some kind of chip on their shoulders, nothing spiritual about that. They don't want to help people, they like to use their "virtue" as a way to feel superior to other humans.

I think when it comes election time and people have provoked the FoF newsletter into running anti-gambling articles on the front page of every issue, people will see how ridiculously EV- taunting them back is.
It's pretty obvious from this thread that a lot of people grossly underestimate the power that FoF has. Like it or not, some huge chunk (20-30%) of the population will hear what FoF has to say every Sunday morning from a person they implicitly trust with their eternal salvation. Imagine that the week of a critical vote ... Sunday afternoon the phones are ringing off the hook in Washington D.C. as literally millions of people frantically call their reps to inform them that they're out of a job if they let this desecration of human morality to pass.
Instant. Catastrophic. Failure.
Focus on the Family is a political machine which is very, very experienced and very, very good at doing its job. Think of what you want the PPA to be, except that membership is 10x bigger and people mindlessly accept and repeat what TheEngineer tells them.
It's absolutely imperative that online poker be viewed as a trivial threat as legislation moves forward. These FoF guys aren't kidding, people. They take down Supreme Court nominees and sitting Presidents and if they decide that online poker is akin to abortion, child porn, prayer in schools, and taking Christ out of Christmas, we might as well just pack up and wait for 2-4 years.
I'm not kidding.

I totally second this. The best strategy is to ignore these guys as they clearly dwarf us in numbers and political capital. There will be no sane debate on the topic and drawing their ire on to us is certainly -EV.

Re: Focus on the Family taunts poker players
I love how he answers the "poker vs chess" question.
Quote:
COMMON THEME: Almost no one gambles on chess. This is because chess is a pure skill game where the better player almost always wins … This country was founded on the principles of individual freedom and liberty and I will fight for less government intrusion, not more …
RESPONSE: That’s absolutely correct. Chess is a game of skill – you can see everything the other player is moving on the chess board, and there’s no deception. It’s intellect, strategy, experience, knowledge and wisdom combined to create chess “skill.”
With poker, you can have the most experienced, intellectual, probability-spewing gurus on the planet and the flip of one or two cards (chance) can make or break their hands. It’s not like chess, because math skills must still succumb ultimately to the flip of a card or chance. And with online poker, who knows if you’re being tricked on the computer software – no guarantees.
|
Based on that logic, we should also ban: - the Flea Flicker
- play action
- breaking ball
- changeup
- rope-a-dope
- the movie The Sixth Sense
and on and on and on.

How did your country get into this mess? You're close to being an Iranian style theocracy. The lunatics are close to running the asylum. These idiots should be laughed out of every position of influence.

Short answer: corruption.

Tell me you're not a creationist, slugger.
Liberty "University" requires its "professors" to believe and espouse young earth creationism, which maintains the earth is 10000 years old. They have a dinosaur bone in their museum that is labeled as being 3000 years old.

Outed. Not sure how one defines the term though, but I don't want to hijack the thread with that stuff.
