MGM Resorts strikes deal for hotel-casino complex near Washington, D.C.

http://www.casinocitytimes.com/artic...gton-d-c-60943

Lawmakers still have to approve this but the deal is done with MGM. Table games, lower taxes etc are included.

This only adds pressure on the legislators to approve the plan. Table games are a step closer to reality in Maryland

Poor Penn National sinking their money into that crappy dilapidated horse track thinking it ever had the chance to get the mystery 6th license.

The Baltimore/MD/DC/VA area is so huge there's enough to go around for everyone.

In terms of for us here in the poker world, Maryland Live! will get the jump-start, and the Harbor room, whenever it materializes, will be a very strong competitor. Harrahs Baltimore, the way Harrahs runs things, will be the dive of the poker rooms.

From Washington Post:

"Update, 4:50 p.m.: Matt Gallagher, chief of staff to O’Malley and a member of the work group, has announced that there is not sufficient consensus to move forward on an expanded gambling proposal."

Basically, "if O'Malley wants to call a special session, he'll call a special session". So it's a tiny glimmer of hope still.

The hang-up is over the PG casino and lowering the tax rate. That 67% is diabolical.

This one about how comptroller Peter Franchot went anti-PG-casino on O'Malley.

From the read of things, it's basically Franchot (who's looking to run for gov in 2014) and Cordish (owners of Maryland Live!) v. O'Malley (who could put in the PG casino) and MGM (who'll get the casino).

If PG had just approved a casino in the first place, this **** wouldn't be happening.

Re: Coming in 2013 - Maryland B&M Poker - 23 months to go

I can't blame Cordish fighting tooth and nail over the PG casino, it's all about location. Right now they'll have the DC market and share Baltimore with Harrahs.

And Baltimore isn't that much of a detriment because between them and where Harrahs has proposed to build is literally a straight 11 mile shot down 295, so people have a choice with 11 miles of one lone roadway between them.

If National Harbor gets that casino, it'll eat up a majority of the DC market, and with it all points south to Richmond and Virginia Beach and Raleigh. No one on the VA side is going to dick with Beltway and 95 traffic, and people on the MD side of the Beltway will be pretty much equidistant from the two casinos, and once they choose to drive one way there's no chance of them deciding to jump back into the car to go to the other in the same day.

In the meantime, table games, and for us, poker, is getting held up over the PG casino. They've now gotten tied together, and that's not good. If they don't get detached from one another in the next month or so and return to being two completely separate issues, this thing will be screwed.

Again, if PG had just approved a casino in the first place, this **** wouldn't be happening.

I really dont think a casino can be profitable at that kind of tax rate. It's insane.

Don't forget that the main reason all this expansion talk is even being considered is because of the increased revenue that would come with a mega resort at PG county. While I agree that poker is most certainly being held up by the PG County casino, be cognizant to the fact that the legislature tries to legalize table games almost every year. 2012 is different because of the budget shortfalls and the promise of increased revenue that would come with allowing table games and building a casino.

This is one of the issues that brings in all the lobbyists, so inaction would be pretty stunning. Here's the latest updates including House Speaker Michael Busch (it was the House that pretty much stalled everything) quote that provides hope that this is going to be resolved this summer;

Quote:
reporters were summoned back to the speaker's office. Busch then said he wanted to underscore that the workgroup was "98 percent in agreement," except for the tax issue, and that additional progress could be made for Gov. Martin O'Malley to call a special session next month.

Re: Coming in 2013 - Maryland B&M Poker - 23 months to go

I kind of feel that the casinos would accept the gregarious 67% hit continuing on slots if they can get a heftier lower rate on table games in the neighborhood of where Pennsylvania has them (approximately 15%), maybe even around 20%.

I know the approximate 50-55% hit the Delaware casinos get hit for put a very nasty burden on being able to do things.

Re: Coming in 2013 - Maryland B&M Poker - 23 months to go

Was out of country when all of the above went down last week. Seems like the House is holding this up over the percentage of tax decrease. I don't trust that the "consensus" thought though. When they call a special session, which I am 90% sure of, the House will mess it up while Miller sits and waits...his ducks are all lined up.
