Hi Rich, How often should we send the PPA emails?

To Everyone, Please stop adding legalizing drugs and prostitution to your arguments in poker article comments sections. You are not going to help drugs and prostitution get legalized this way. You are going to hurt pokers chances of getting legalized. People who are on the line of whether to support poker or not don't need to have poker, drugs and prostitution all lumped together in their minds.

^^ This is how a lot of people think of poker players or old west movies with a bunch of drunks, a gunslinger and a fancy gambler. Someone cheats and gets shot or someone loses the farm.

They took down non trusted comments at Las Vegas Sun, that's where the legalizing pot and prostitution was.

Just read the comments where there is a lot of posting and you will see a few.

There was one in the comments here:

I think one per lawmaker every 45 days or so would be fine. I'd add phone calls, Facebook posts, and visits to local offices to that.

This.

Everyone should feel free to post on these issues all they want, of course, but I ask that you all please consider keeping these posts separate from the poker posts.

Let's continue to own a lot of Facebook pages (senators, Congressmen, Congressional committees, etc.). Rep. Barton has cited our Facebook posts, so we know it works.

Imagine if we all participated in the Facebook posts! With that, let's all focus on this this weekend (and beyond, of course):
  • The House Financial Services Committee's Facebook page is here.
  • Let's get some posts on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce page (here)
  • The Dept. of Justice's page is here.
  • Senators' FB pages: Senator Facebook Listing
  • We need lots of posts on the issue of poker and lots of "liking" of pro-poker comments.
Recurring actions:

Let's all send the PPA pre-written letters to our lawmakers. These will be updated when Rep. Barton's poker bill is introduced to the House (in other words, soon), so let's all get the current letters out before that. Once done, please reply ITT with "done", "sent", etc. to encourage others. Thanks!

I created a short URL for this thread that should help with sharing: http://******/takeaction

Finally, let's recruit others. Our personal recommendations of this effort will go far. The daily action plan takes very little time and there's no denying it's way +EV for the time invested. Once done, please post here that you made the request, along with posting your personal commitment to participate in the action plan.

Thanks!

I went ahead and bolded that for emphasis. I've been saying this for weeks and have been laughed at.

Such comments are from a small minority but they are in all of the venues where we have been sending messages. I even saw one comment that said "I should have the right to play poker, sell my body, and abort a baby." WTF. Comments like this have no place in our fight, regardless of one's opinions on abortion or drugs.

This is nothing for them to laugh about. We are so close to getting a poker bill through. Changing how we and poker are perceived was a part of that. If these commenter's want poker in the US they need to keep it about poker and keep it respectful.

I don't think it is necessarily poker players saying these things. Most are too lazy to write anything about regulating IPoker. Writing regulate more than 1 thing? Kind of a stretch.

+1

To take it a little further, several of the common arguments in favor of online poker are also arguments which would be in favor of the legalization of hard drugs, prostitution, etc., such as:
  • Well-minded adults should have the right to any private conduct which is not unduly harmful to them and does not affect others
  • It happens anyway, so it should be legalized so that it can be regulated and that the proceeds benefit our own domestic interests
  • "Potentially harmful or distasteful" activities that are similar (cigarettes and B&M poker, respectively) are allowed, so there's no reason not to allow this activity, especially when it could be more closely monitored to mitigate negative effects
Don't get me wrong -- I think these are important and valid arguments. But they won't appeal to the entire political spectrum. In my experience, some people who are inclined to be opposed to poker will hear these arguments from us and make the association "hey, that sounds just like the pro-drug arguments, maybe poker is like drugs".

These arguments probably shouldn't be omitted entirely, but when the context allows for it, I tend to bias the arguments I make towards lines of reasoning which don't apply to "uncouth" behaviors but do apply to poker (that poker is of similar structure to healthy and respectable competitive games, the various merits of competitive strategy games, etc.)

Let's continue contacting mainstream media to ask them to increase coverage of our issue. Let's contact Politico today. As they are widely read on Capitol Hill, this is a great place for us to reach out to.

Rich, should we be putting pressure on Reid to act? Do you have any knowledge on how or when he'll be moving legislation in the senate?

Thanks.

Thanks for all the time and effort Engineer. Despite the constant criticism I think most people appreciate that you are fighting for poker rights in the US.
