I live in the US and have heard that you can't play online poker if you visit another country, and that you have to be a resident of that country. That doesn't make sense to me because other laws apply in the country or state or whatever you're in, like I can go to Colorado and smoke pot, same is true for amsterdam, afaik anyway.

Does anyone know the actual law on this? Is not being able to play in other countries just a pokerstars thing?

There is no international law that says US residents can't play online poker in other countries. There is no US law that says US residents can't play online poker while traveling outside the US. Any site policy to the contrary is strictly dependent on the policies of that site, and possibly on laws of the jurisdiction in which you are traveling.

Awesome answer, thanks. I might look into other sites policy on this, sites other than pokerstars I mean, like party poker, if they even still operate, and see if it would be fun to go to Canada for a week and play lol

Pretty sure you will run into trouble with about every major site unless you can prove residency abroad. Sure you can start some new account and deposit, but usually sites now wont give you a cashout without documents.
