But perhaps more important to Mr Pappas is the game's quintessential American-ness. He fears that in shifting from the kitchen table to the computer table, opponents have sullied the game's cultural history.

"Americans watch poker on television. The vast majority have played with their parents, kids or friends," he says. "It's a game that encapsulates the American spirit. It's part of Americana."

wtf? Does this not sound anti-online poker via twisting words around or am I reading it wrong? The whole article did not seem very in our favor imo.

haha I was just about to post this

On front page of bbc news website ATM, so will get good coverage global.
decent article, imo and references PPA and has a part from Andy Bloch though prob dude to BBC advertising rules no mention he's a FTP pro.

Don't agree with the poster above - the BBC is known for it's impartiality and mentions all sides and the facts - although I'd liked if they'd mentioned more about the several Bills were attempted to be brought and are in process at non-state level.

Best 2 things form article are comment by Andy Bloch and PPA head that mention diff. between games of poker as game of skill and casino/house games:

"John Pappas, executive director of the Poker Players Alliance (PPA), jokes that there is no such thing as the world's greatest lottery player. "

I agree. What they are saying about internet poker has nothing to do with his qoute about it being American.

It sounds okay. I couldn't find any sense of criticism from that quote.

On a quick read it can seem like it is a bit twisted, but the key word is "opponents." The BBC line wasn't meant to be anti-online. They're simply saying that the game has shifted from kitchen tables to online and opponents of online poker have forgot that it is an American game. Well, Pappas is saying that, the BBC is just interpreting it.

As it's primarily written for a British audience, the section giving the social conservative line is just attempting to explain to Brits why online poker is seen by some in the US as a problem - to a non-American reader the 'Stop Predatory Gambling' viewpoint just seems ridiculous. Saying that online poker is "putting casinos ... into every home office and dorm room in America, 24 hours a day" just comes across as funny and maybe a bit weird but not something to be taken seriously. Most of the article though is in favour of regulated online poker.
