Why facts and accuracy matter in Legislation Why facts and accuracy matter in Legislation

Calling someone a Congresswoman who is not one is one thing...but this forum deserves better, especially from a prolific poster.

(There is a HUGE difference between a state representative and a US Congresswoman. The impact/importance of their activity is vastly different. To brush off the error as "true,... but" lacks maturity. I was surprised there was no whining about "spinning".)

Thanks to permafrost for the catch. Too bad it has not slowed down the perpetuation of the error, that repetition of the error makes the posters generally here look like idiots, knee-jerk or otherwise.

I for one apoligize for being too lazy/busy to check, as the Bill numbers looked odd for a Congressional matter. I relied too much on TE's longevity/credibility, especially when he referred to rating her on his list. It never occurred to me that he glossed over the little detail of who he was reporting on.

There is a good reason that responsible writers look to original source material and fact check, rather than rush to publish a knee-jerk reaction to their own mistaken notion of what they read.

What this forum needs is a more rigorous insistence on accuracy, less pretending that cheerleading is analysis or discussion. Unless posters take the time to understand what they are repeating blindly, they do a disservice to the forum's users, in both the specific post and general discussion crediiblity.

In a way, I can appreciate the fact that someone is keeping TE on his toes. Having a "jester" or "foible" is a time honored way to insure that you do not end up taking your self too seriously.

That having been said, the jester always needs to know when he goes too far - the king is still the king.

TE is on vacation right now and none-the-less took the time to post and respond to an article. I do not know names of all the members of congress and could have easily made the same mistake, especially if I was away from the databases stored on my work computer. The article talks of an anti-online poker/gambling initiative coming from, surprise, Utah. Hardly earth shattering, but newsworthy.

This is not a publication of legal record. It is not even the NY Times. This critique is similar to the guy who raked Pappas over the coals for bad spelling and grammar in a post in another thread.

No one is perfect. No one posts perfectly every time. I'd rather have the comment and news posted, knowing any mistakes will be caught and corrected by other posters (or even TE himself after more reading - and certainly by permafrost if no one else ), then wait for a perfect comment or no comment at all.

If the "king" is wearing no clothes, he is naked.

While you may have fond feelings for TE, he can be your king, not mine. Stroke him all you want.

This forum is not about him. It is about legislation.

Posting about him does not mean I am joking or acting the jester.

Sorry you took offense at my comment MF - the role of "court jester" was a very specific and honorable one in Medieval society, and it was in that context that I was using the term.

You are far from a "fool" in any modern sense of that word.

And the same is true of TE.

And this is America and I dont support kings or czars of any kind.

But I do like analogies, sorry.

MF,

Your NIMBY post in another thread was valid.

This post is just being nitty, and it doesn't help your cause when we know you're going to stop posting soon.

Milton, I've always appreciated your contributions to legislation, but if this is the kind of quality post we can expect from you now (as of late it is par for the course), then I will be glad to see you depart. A growing (and now majority?) of your posts have been essentially trolling TE. Which, while a time honored and moderator/red approved tradition in legislation, was I thought, beneath you.

Criticism is fine, but the OP here is just petty. There are plenty of inaccuracies that crop up in legislation and I agree we need to keep them to a minimum. I've said as much myself. Amazing though that TE was the only example you cited.

I should have said something once I realized it was a state rep, but was busy losing buyins at a fast pace.

So, now you're a self-appointed PL forum mod?!?!? For someone who's out of here tomorrow, you sure do have strong opinions on how the rest of us should proceed.

You were once a very strong contributor to the online poker advocacy effort, but IMO you're now nothing but a distraction. Regarding the overall movement (not regarding this forum...unlike you I won't pretend to be a mod), I do agree with you on one thing...it really is time for you to go.

I think that is a fair critique, which is why the account is being returned to RIP. Personal feuds are a distraction from substantive discussion. I afforded myself an 8 day binge however at this year -end.
