Hey all,

I'm a South African looking to move with my French girlfriend to Canada. She wants to study in Monteal and I want to continue my poker career. I understand that many American pros have moved to Canada to play, my question is under what VISA/work permit are they doing this with? Or how are player's from other areas of the globe playing poker in Canada?

It is so difficult to find information on this, anything you could share with me would be super useful.

Thanks a lot.

I imagine that the vast majority of poker expats in Canada are from the US. US citizens can stay in Canada without a Visa for 180 days (per calendar year), so I imagine they use this provision. I highly doubt anyone would be able to get a work visa to legally stay longer. I'd be willing to bet that anyone trying to stay for more than 180 days in a calendar year does so sketchily/illegally. I went to Canada from the US this weekend to ski and they didn't stamp my passport or anything so I imagine that if you leave the country and re-enter every once in a while you can probably fly under the radar. Worst case scenario you get scolded by a border patrol officer and banned from the country for 10 years or something, then you move on to Mexico or whatever.

Do anything at your own risk though if it's not completely by the book.
