TL DR

Can someone please sum up in basic words when a likely time that stars will be available in the US?

Would love for 20% ROI's to be available on sit and go's again.

Probably later this year for players in NJ only.

Here's some news that came out today..1 bill down 1 remaining, and there's always Santa Ysabel going rogue. Legislation doesn't look good this year based on this LA times article.

That really sucks, although not too surprising. There were still some issues with that bill, and it seemed like a longshot for a compromise to be reached on all the issues. What are the odds of something passing in 2015?

Legislation is very hard to predict, many interest are involved in CA, and the state is very large. There are many tribes, of which many will be left out, there are many card clubs, most of which will be left out. Finally there is Horse Racing that the tribes sort of insist be left out.

Getting all these interest on board is very hard. Some of the sticking points seems to be becoming unstuck. Poker Stars only the assets will be around and the company will be licensed in New Jersey next year. Once licensed in one state it is tougher to exclude (per one of the reporters) with direct language in the bill. Also there performance in a regulated environment can be judged. The bad actor clause is rumored to not be a huge sticking point.

Tracks might be tougher but they can't really have that much power any more. Finally some way of including smaller tribes/card clubs will have to be compromised.

Overall the bill came a long way this year. Both houses seem to have gained a lot of knowledge on the issues, and better bills have be produced. Reggie Jones-Sawyer will introduce a new bill in December, and that will have updated language and hopefully some momentum can be produced to pass next year. Fingers crossed for 2015, or unfortunately CA may move to the back burner as none of the parties can compromise to pass a bill.

... And 2015 is a non-election year - might not help, but it can't hurt.

Please, please, pleaseeeeeeee keep Pokerstars OUT! If they are let in, then I sure hope there will be other sites to play on, or that the software doesn't have handicap code in the software still!!!!!!

Election year is a big reason it failed this year . . . far more lobby money gets spent if they milk the bill for all its worth. if they had passed it in June, the money would stop flowing.

Also, failure to act is, pure and simple, a lack of leadership being shown by the CA legislature, and CA players should make an extra effort to point that out in some twitter blasts.

Voters elect leaders to make the tough decisions, not to sit back and let the special interests haggle over the details of a piece of legislation. You write a bill, you give it a public hearing, you make the decision.

Correa is out, so no skin off of his ass. But I would make sure you get some social media campaign going to hold those legislator's feet to the fire leading up to November.

Unfortunately, very very small issue, very very large state and even safer districts .. though it is improved and new election format should help some.

However, tribes really do hold all the cards .. hoping Private Table launches just to stir the pot. Finally, I hope tribes are seeing the decay in gambling without adding some form of online element. Overall, at least there is some hope in 2015 and it should be easier to see where everyone stands as a bill is introduced and hopefully reduction of infighting. At that point, maybe some moves on.

If CA can't lead a bit on this other states have a long road to launch.

Looking to move into a new place, but that would require a 12 month lease. Current place is month to month. Both in NJ. Main factor would be legalization in Cali before Sep 2015. Is it even a realistic factor worth worrying about?

(Sorry, haven't followed along in a while. Catching up on posts now.)

I wouldn't base your plans around it. Cali does have solid live poker, however. And you're a drive from Vegas.

Sounds like 2015 has a shot, but we've heard this story before.

You can probably sign a 2 year lease in NJ. I highly doubt there will be regulated online poker in California within the next two years.

How is NJ online poker btw?

However it is now, it will be much better in one to two months when PokerStars is granted a transactional waiver to operate.

Hopefully, but I'm not sure I understand the logic. Borgata is the biggest casino out here and has their own online site. You can walk in and deposit or cash out at the casino cage. I don't get why that' wouldn't be more reputable to a random poker fan. PS just seems like something all of us would want.

The very earliest for CA is some time in 2016. 2015 will be a new legislature, bill has to be introduced, committee will hear it, tribes, tracks and card rooms will fight about it and maybe something will pass late in the session or early 2016. Then regs have to be written and licenses granted, it is a long an slow process. I think all CA players are just hoping to get it started in 2015. If you got it and want to grind NJ is the place to be.

controversial legislation does better in odd numbered years, as legislators move bills to 'pay back' donors in the previous election cycle. In even numbered years, issues are held up to keep the donations coming in
