Quite the contrary, I'm 24 years old, work a 55-60 hour a week full time job, and play poker probably 30-40 hours a month to pick up some spare income on the side (~20K hands a month). Started as an attempt to make a little money to put towards rent in my free time, but as I've moved up through the ranks I've found myself in a spot where I'm able to earn $150/hr (+/- $50 or so).
I still have what I would call a nicely balanced life. I go out drinking once or twice a week, spend quality time with the gf, and still spend plenty of time hanging with friends. It's moreso that during the week when I get off work, I'm finding it tougher to motivate myself to spend an hour at the gym or playing guitar because I look at the tables and go "oh man, I'm probably expected to make $200 if I sit down and play for an hour instead".
I think a big part of this is that I feel like I've stumbled onto a loophole in life, being able to make this kind of money at this age, and I worry that at some point this loophole could go away. I hope that poker is around and profitable for many years to come, but there's a part of me that says "hey, if online poker went away in 12 months, won't I have wished I had played more and taken advantage of it, really earning as much as I can in my spare time so I can use that income to do a bunch of sweet stuff? Definitely agree that poker is a way to enable me to do more in my non-poker life, but I'm struggling with the trade off of playing 20K hands a month, or playing 10K hands a month but playing a bunch more guitar and making it to the gym 4 nights a week.
