NL400 SH back-raise spot

Poker Stars $400.00 No Limit Hold'em - 6 players - View hand 1625953
DeucesCracked Poker Videos Hand History Converter

SB: $716.82
BB: $305.66
UTG: $478.48
MP: $435.66
CO: $1010.64
Hero (BTN): $400.00

Pre Flop: ($6.00) Hero is SB with 9 9
2 folds, CO raises to $12, BU calls $12, Hero calls $10, BB raises to $50, 1 fold, BU raises to $100, Hero ?

BU is 25/20/9 player, no idea about his back-raising tendencies. If he shipped I would snap call with 99 and expect to be dominating his lower pocketpairs.
CO is a 40/15 fish, one could argue that BU would 3bet very often for value. he folds only 43% to 3bets and opens 26% range
BB is a notorious spanish squeezer, has 4betted cold so many times vs my resteals.

Do you fold or call? and are u calling 77/88?

Re: NL400 SH back-raise spot

Says ur btn in the stack sizes.. 0.o I assume ur sb?

BU can prob have a lot of nutty hands in his range if he also realizes that the BB is a squeeze happy reg.

I think trying to jam is not that great here. Its a marginal spot and BB can have a good hand, and so can BTN. We've only invested 10 more into the pot and double backraise looks awfully suspicious.

Re: NL400 SH back-raise spot

yeah assume I'm SB.

I'm actually BU and I got snapped off when I jammed with 77 so I'm wondering if I would get more credit if I made a smaller back-raise

Re: NL400 SH back-raise spot

You could receive some extra credit here in a few instances, but the cons of the play far outweigh the pros. There are a few things working against you that describe why other solid players don't have this as a balanced part of their 100bb effective game.

1) It's tough to balance the play - Say you want to stack off with 3%-8% hands here but have determined you'll have a profitable bluff about 20% of the time. There just aren't enough hands you can raise with this size as a bluff because...

2) You're offering an opponent absurd odds preflop. - Unless your opponents give you a ton of credit for a huge hand only here, they can see a flop with a one overcard hand like A3s and play well against you.

3) Your hand plays poorly postflop. - It's just going to be tough to get anything better to fold postflop. Almost any time more money goes in, you'll be behind. So why not use that money possibly getting more folding equity preflop because...

4) You induce a wider range to shove on you or see a flop - This isn't a good plan when you race with almost all of that range. The value of the back raise shove with a small or medium pair is folding out hands like AJ and KQ (hopefully) or winning by sucking out or racing better when called. By raising so small, you seriously hinder your chances to do both.

5) Your opponent rarely makes a mistake against you. - You're over-repping your hand and planning to call off a stack? Doesn't sound like a great plan. Poker is a game where you attempt to construct ranges of hands that take certain actions against which your opposition will make incorrect wagers. In this situation, you aren't allowing for such mistakes to be made.

6) In position you should slow play more often (not do this) - What would you need to take this action with? It doesn't really make much sense for any hand, especially when you're on the button. More importantly, the play has a very tough time fitting into a balanced game plan.

FWIW I don't agree with Shoota at all. There is most definitely a place and a time for this play to be part of the game-plan.

lol you´re never getting credit after flatting a hand here in the SB, because nodoby ever flat TT+ in that spot. You might get me to put 88-, but BB is still there too
