Well depends on how much and how long the guy has been playing. If you play 2-3 hours a day it's going to be hard to save up that much money. Same goes for people who haven't been playing MSNL+ for more than 2-3 years.

I was always curious: if you have a year set aside and live for a month do you now have 11 months? Is this an emergency fund or like prepaid living expense? How far into that do you dip before cashing out? do you just wait for a big month and then reset? seems like you have to live out of your roll at least indirectly unless you're backed for everything.

you move from cheaper place to cheaper place so you always have 12 months living expenses, eventually finishing off your downswing in India.

So I like poker and that surprises you? I def have other interests in life, but I'm just saying I dont think there will be a day when I'm 100% done with poker.

Right, my point was that "liking" something is all relative, and I doubt many people are going to find poker high on their list after grinding for multiple years, so our goal should be to retire as early as possible while maintaining a relatively good life in the meantime.

When I say "retire" or "be done with poker" I really mean "no demand to earn income from that outlet anymore," as I too doubt poker will completely vanish from a former professional's life.

abouyt 10 years? I'm a nit when it comes to this stuff though.

I still look forward to grinding poker in the next 5 years, or even longer because I still really enjoy playing. I'm in my early 20's though, so that probably makes a difference.

i still enjoy poker, but worry about the opportunity cost of doing this too long, and missing out on other opportunities. Specifically entering the workforce too late, and the diminishing value of my degree the farther out i get from it. 3 years was just a random number i picked, but i think it seems about right. tbf i havent exactly been crushing games lately which is probably affecting my outlook.

~12 months in cash, way more in different kinds of investments but no plan touching those. I live out of my BR though, in larger downswings I let it be and grab money out of my safety net and rebuild it when I am out of the downswing.

I love poker, there's almost nothing I enjoy doing more. I can't imagine playing poker if I didn't enjoy it; I think it would be such a soulless/awful job if I lost my passion for it that I'd just get a normal job.

6 months, 0 with a halftime job or the like that roughly covers rent of a crappier place/insurance and so forth+ low end food i.e. somewhat over minimum living conditions.

Kind of depends on how quickly you think you can get a job, how fixed your spending is, how quickly you can detect that you should move down (and do it) and how willing you are to adjust your spending.

I'd guess 2 years+ with a family that depends on your income.

A little bit surprised at how bold ppl in this thread are w their safety cushions, some of you guys are really young and perhaps that is part of it if I´d go by myself, but anything less than 12 months is really asking for trouble. If you can´t find a way to put one years worth of living expenses in an account that is more or less immediately liquid as well as more or less static (cash / bonds but not equity for instance) and you´ve been doing this for a while, sooner or later you´re gonna wish u did.

As for the 6 figures in investment / savings, people should consider that the opportunity cost of poker is way too high to treat 400 k made in poker like 400 k made as a dentist.

As a pro you must understand all aspects from accountancy to financial advisory.
Opportunity cost is for these players who think that poker will provide a living for the next 5- 20 yrs.Diversify tax and inflation are what you need to beat full stop and all investments/savings should be geared towards this aim.
BTW there are funds that still make profit and reach over this aim.But your portfolio and revenue streams must be maximised and balanced for long term growth of your wealth.

How lucky can one guy be.

I keep most of my cash online. Money I have in savings accounts could prob keep me afloat for a few months to a year, depending on the kind of life I'm living. The money I have left online pretty much just sits there are may as well be in a savings account though, as my usual games are 1/2 and 2/4, and I put in some grind at 3/6 as well.

I ain't afeared of the somewhat regular hsmtt shot or 25/50 or 50/100 shot though, which makes for some pretty huge swongs (usually down ) and makes me feel like a degen for playing these games without a 500k roll.
