And it depends on the situation as far as what we might require. If someone makes death threats on this site and the police get involved, I don't imagine we would need anything beyond their badge.

In other cases where it's not so clear we let our lawyers handle it and just give the lawyers all the info we have on the user in question. I don't think this has happened more than three times in our history.
Fascinating stuff.

I was curious how vulnerable we are from:
1.) Some wack job with a fake badge claiming he needs non public info
2.) How cooperative you are with assisting "any" police who are violating the 4th amendment of a citizen by releasing information without a warrant signed by a judge. This is s check and balance thing to protect from from rouge tyrants in the system.

While it may seem like minutia, you were recently visited by the FBI, this is the wikileaks of the poker industry. If there is a corporate takeover of online poker driving the DOJ's actions this year, they will be squashing dissenters down the road.

we asked them about internet poker and they said it wasn't their department and had no opinion.
They will be back later to deal with online poker rico charges. :P

If it makes you feel better, the same fbi officer had come to our assistance a few years ago after our site was partially hacked. They didn't care much about our individual situation but the perpetrator, himself, was committing a lot of internet crimes at the time so they took an interest.

I suspect there are many law enforcement agencies very well aware of this site and if they ever decided to screw with us and all the users it would be pretty awful. On the other hand, I think privacy has already flown out the window. We're already at the mercy of those in charge.

You don't have any Fourth Amendment rights to protect you from people volunteering evidence against you. The Fourth Amendment protects the person who is being searched, which is 2p2, and is moot when consent is given (ie, when the information is turned over voluntarily).

You have no expectation of privacy because 2p2's servers are not your property or under your control and because 2p2's privacy policy explicitly states that it will share your information when it believes that your actions violate the law or threaten others.

This is my concern. See something say something?

I am a medical marijuana patient. A mod recently referred to one of my posts as "illegal drug" content.

The Attorney General in our state is being a real tyrant over this issue, hence the heightened state of paranoia.

I don't really come to 2+2 to talk about cannabis, I have other forums to visit for that.

I think you need to be less paranoid. Law enforcement has better thing to hunt down people who mention drug use on the internet.

You think that making death threats is analogous to talking about recreational drug use?

If that was directed at me I was responding to Pcallinallin not the OP.

Also, fwiw, Led is probably most mad at himself. He's just not prepared to off himself, yet.

I moved here to the state I live in to abide by the laws. And I do. If I were that paranoid I would not have posted my question, I would have PMed it to an admin. I actually am less paranoid. I am acting paranoid, and making paranoid points, to establish a better understanding of how the site deals with the actual point of the thread.

In ATF, and the topic is how to deal with threats, actual or perceived but based on posted material.

So is there a point where the admins or mods would actually call the police for things posted? (a la I will kill you and I know where you live and I have a loaded gun and here is a picture.... or even a suicide thread?)

On the contrary, is there a level that is clearly not a threat and the forum would not participate in willfully providing requested information to investigators?

Would the site protect its advertisers from investigation?

What about whistleblowers? (Brainwashdodo before UB was fully outed?)

Where are the thresholds of "protected" and "dangerous"?

I know I have too much time on my hands, but that's how it is in America these days.

Mods/Admins have gotten involved with suicide threats.

Tough to say what the threshold is on what 2+2 would report. It is usually up to the recipient of the threats to make the call to law enforcement, and as Mat has stated, 2+2 cooperates fully with official investigations.
