fwiw, there's now a "reason" box we get to type in a message to the user for why we are banning or even temp banning them. from what i've seen the mods have been pretty good about explaining why (not who, necessarily, though i don't know if every ban should have a who attached) the ban is happening.

also, i don't think that as much explaination for deleting or locking of posts is needed as there should be for bans.

edd,

a problem with this is that there are plenty of people who get banned for reasons where we wouldn't like them to continue to have PM ability (such as PM spam). however, i agree that this is important.

one idea is to have 2 groups of permabanned posters, one that can PM another that cannot. (or one that cannot PM at all and one that can only PM mods or admins?)

thoughts?

It's hard to be too sympathetic to this, because 1- I think storing important information in PMs is silly but more importantly 2- if you do have important info tied to your 2p2 account, it's not hard to follow the rules and not lose access to that account.

Re: "What to do if you've been banned" sticky - Discussion thread

Does anyone else find it a bit quizzical that we even need a "what to do if you've been banned" thread?

In my opinion, bans should be reserved for spammers, trolls and people whose sole purpose is to make other's enjoyment on the site miserable. When you ban these people, they know why they've been banned, they don't need an explanation.

The very idea that when a user is banned their undertitle is changed to "banned" is a bit unsettling to me. It would appear that some mods are more concerned with showing they have "power" instead of actually doing what mods should be doing -- making the boards as enjoyable as possible for the most amount of people. (Hint: these "people" also happen to be THE CUSTOMERS)

That being said, I like the sticky. Also agree mods should give a reason for bans, especially since they now have a box in which to do so.

If that were the case, you'd think they would change the undertitle to "banned by <insert mod name here>"

dids ive never circumvented a ban, ever, even if i didnt agree with it. im sure there are many people who have private real life info that they had pm'd to them. it was a phone number i had pm'd to me and i didnt remember to input it into my cell phone. dont be so quick to judge me on this.

We need a "What to do if you have NOT been banned" sticky to make it fair for everyone.

EDD,

Dids can't begin to fathom why someone would do something different from him, and has no intention of ever learning why they would do that.

Every time I've checked the banned users CP every user has been given a reason. It's the same reason that the poster sees. And they all look pretty sufficient in detail. So this may have been a valid excuse before but it isn't anymore.

Then the users can actually follow what you outlined in that thread. I've been banned a couple times without knowing who did it or why. Makes it hard to contact the appropriate mod.

Also, if you don't want users making new accounts and ATF threads, the mods really need to start reply to people when they ask questions. The rules you gave only work if the mods do their part too.
Absolutely on giving users solid feedback. I dont know why i was exiled from oot, and ive no idea why i lost my previous account.

In fact, re oot, i have never really done anything that bad in comparison to many many people who regularly post there - please feel free to find exceptions, they do not exist. I certainly dont start random crappy threads and if you dont like my opinions, well, there is the ignore function.

Anyway, when my account got perma'ed, it was temp banned for a week:

Quote:
You have been banned at the The 2+2 Forums.
Reason: 7 day ban for death wish in BBV4L on top of other offenses.
Ban duration: 7 days.
Which, btw, i totally accept that whilst i was joking i crossed the line.

However when the sofware got changed over my ban magically changed to perma. I dont even know if it was done on purpose or by default in the software changeover or something.

I have only been banned for 1 day previous to that (according to gmail which has everything recorded) and i think that 1 day ban was harsh:

Quote:
You have been banned at the The 2+2 Forums.
Reason: News at 11:

Americans are stupid

Ban duration: 1 day.
I also broke my oot exile when i got this new account because i didnt realise it applied to all accounts (which i obv wouldnt have done if i had been told EVER about this).

Anyway, im rambling i think, tell people why they are banned and unban my old account pretty much cliffnotes this post.

So I suppose if the majority of people thought we should boil midgets in oil for entertainment, you'd be cool with that?

Protecting the rights of the minority is the hardest test for any organization to withstand. Without minority rights you have mob rule which never really tends to end the way it began.

Fun history lesson: the very man who approved the guillotine for use in France (King Louis XIV) was put to death by one less than a year later.
