Two seems like a reasonable number. I just hated seeing quotes with 10 different levels in them.

As demonstrated by phiphika in the OP, there is nothing stopping you from nesting.

Just use multiquote and cut and paste if it really helps your post.

Yes, I know this is not as easy as it was. And many times a quote that is nested two-deep does make sense.

But on balance, it is better that quotemonkeys don't get nested quotes by default.

(a) it stretches out threads, which should be less of a concern now that the forums have a "fixed width" browsing option

(b) it adds a lot of unnecessary redundancy where a quotation just snowballs, especially where two posters are arguing back and forth

I assume we can agree that vhawk is a good poster in SMP?

I used to stop reading his posts because he would quote 400 qoutes back and I wouldn't know how far back was relevant to read, so I'd just skip them.

I agree that there should be some middle ground, but I hated posts that looked like #16 in this thread.

I agree that maybe 2 or three should be the default.

True, it is not very difficult for me to do this, but most people don't bother. And it's difficult for me to follow when those people don't multi-nest. I agree setting the number at 2 would be a huge improvement if that is possible.
