****, Ryan, you're supposed to warn us so we can delete all the mod forum posts about him first!

But seriously, excellent choice.

In perhaps more detail than you need:
  1. There are a number of brand new accounts that play in POG games, particularly werewolf. These new accounts include the occasional new member, including some who joined specifically because they have played werewolf on other sites and wanted to try it here; more, though are gimmick accounts created for one of two reasons: (a) to moderate a game, or (b) to play in a game in which anonymous play is required. There are also some players who aren't gimmick accounts, they simply haven't posted much before starting in at POG. Finally, it is a POG tradition that some long-established players create gimmick accounts just for fun, sometimes for a single game.
  2. The moderator of a werewolf game needs to send numerous PMs to players, including a minimum of one per player at the start of the game to tell each player his role. We do have the werewolf moderators' group for this, so if your new rule wouldn't mess with that this is not a problem.
  3. Players in a game may need to send and receive numerous PMs to other players. Players whose role involves communicating with others privately during some phases of the game may need to have moderately involved conversations in order to pick their plays. (Specifically, in a standard game the "wolves" need to discuss and agree on which "villager" they are going to kill during each night phase of the game. In a more complex game there are variants on this theme, but that;'s the basics of it.) Most often this discussion takes place via AIM, but almost as often there is at least one player who needs to be involved in the discussion but cannot use, does not have, or does not feel comfortable with AIM; in such cases PMs are the method of choice, as almost no one uses e-mail for it.
  4. Less importantly, free private communication between a player and the game moderator is sometimes required when a rules problem or substitution arises.
there are other games that require moderately extensive private communication, too, but werewolf is the major issue.

Does that help?

Anyone confused by that post would have a bit of difficulty playing werewolf with me.

I assume POG is some sort of PM-use heavy game or something.

If you give mods the ability to override the newbie restriction, upgrade a newbie to normal user PM level, you can solve this problem. Legitimate requests for a waiver of the restriction can be promptly granted.

POG is Puzzles and Other Games, which is where we play, among other games, werewolf, the game my above quote is about.

PM use can be heavy, as described above, but the game as we play it is fundamentally thread-based. A game with thirty or so players will wind up running somewhere between 2500 and 40001 or so posts most of the time, and they have gone up to eight or nine thousand. This happens over the course of a week or two.

1 These numbers represent the current state of the game; a year ago they were about half as much. None of is sure exactly whey the change has occurred, and it may drift back.

fwiw, seems like a lot of wheel spinning, to no effect... if a spammer wants to spam here, they are gonna get it done.

imho, the best you can do is find it fast and erradicate.

Which means the best solution is backend db scanning on #PMs sent (vs other criteria that shouldn't need elaborating here)...

This has not been the result on other forums.

This isn't likely for a number of reasons. I'll let others elaborate.

I've heard that DB doesn't care for backend scanning, but I agree, something really must be done about his PM spamming.

Try us out; collectively we are pretty friendly to new players.

There are quite a few games other than werewolf — you'll see the signup threads.

New members being unable to send PMs would make it 100% unable for them to play sheep/peehs games in POG since all their interactions are done via sending their answers in a PM. It's mostly a bunch of regulars, but you do get new guys floating in and out every once in a while, plus the occasional gimmick account sending in joke answers.

i would LOVE to have a bigger limit...i run multiple games at once and between inbox/sent box i'm constantly deleting so that I can ensure others can reach me

could we at least give pog mod group members 1000 pms?

also, i'd LOVE to be able to pm 16 people at a time OR have my time between pms changed from 30 seconds to 10 seconds
