CLOSED because this thread doesn't seem to serve any real purpose. It's gotten too long, my OP here isn't as clear as the FAQ entry, http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/fa...faq_disabledpm, and there's not a whole lot to discuss anyway.


I've been quietly testing something out the past few months and am just about ready to implement it. Essentially this will be a win for everyone except spammers.

What's going to happen is that newer users will have their PM capabilities significantly reduced to a max of 50-100 (haven't decided just yet) stored messages and will only be able to send to one user at a time. Regular members will get an increase to 1000 stored messages and retain their other limit.

The requirements for reaching the increase will not be listed, but they should be fair to both legitimate new members and current regulars.

Any thoughts on this before I flip the switch? The only thing I'm still struggling a bit with is the best way to inform new members about the limit so people will understand that's not how things will always be for them.

One of your infamous notices that says something like "NOTICE: To help combat abuse of our private message system, newly registered accounts will have only limited access to the private message system" imo.

I thought about that, and it would work. I just think it might be too annoying having to see that every time you sign in. What I may end up doing is including a note about that in a welcome PM.

Do we think that many people would notice the change? Let the mods know so they can field questions from users. Can you make the change onesy twoesy or is it associated with undertitles or something?

Not associated with titles. The requirement will be a mix of a few different things.

the main issue that comes to mind would be for newish members who already have more than 50 PMs and suddenly one day they are way over capacity without warning - or would this change only affect accounts registered after the new policy goes into effect?

Also, please make it so that members of the POG Game Mods usergroup still have normal PM abilities regardless of their reg date/post count. It's not uncommon for people to make a gimmick account primarily for the purpose of handling a large quantity of game-related PMs without having to delete hundreds of messages on their primary account.

No it will affect everyone. There's really no good way around that, though, so an announcement or this thread will have to do. There's also already visual notifications of a full inbox in a couple places.

Hmm. I believe they have their own group PM settings anyway. But other than the game mods, I'm not concerned about POG regulars somehow not meeting the requirements. That's unlikely.

I archived my PMs, cleared my inbox, and then deleted them. I have done this now ~5 times. Then I poured Mountain Dew on my PC and lost those archives. I would like them back now, please.

please do this soon, im at 99% capacity and hate deleting anything. the first couple times i emptied the box made me sad.
