Was going to mention this but the post was already long enough. One thing which could be done is retain the book knowledgeable mods so they know how to properly identify spoilers. But if you don't allow cross-posting then that's by and large a non-issue, and then the only problems which remain are the occasional random troll and those who pretend they don't read the books so they can be right about their predictions (which is impossibly lame but whatever).

I think in general it's probably good policy to be really overzealous about nuking spoilers in the TV thread. Spoiling somebody is a lot worse than not getting to share your theory about whatever. So if a post is close, deleting it makes sense. (although I do worry if somebody sees a post, sees it's been deleted, and then assumes it was right and gets spoiled anyway).

I would read the TV only thread even if I wasn't allowed to post in it and would report bad posts. Probably just about as often as I do now too. I suspect many other book readers would do the same.

I think I would, too, but could def see just forgetting about it if I couldn't post there.

Cross posting allowed, but no book clarification type stuff even in spoiler tags

Three threads; TV only, spoilerific and mix one like the current tv thread

Pick a side, all spoiler thread posters exiled from TV thread

Mccarthyism style, anyone remotely suspected of being a book reader banned

maybe with the pros and cons of each
Bolded has my vote. Not banning all book readers, but holding them to a very high standard. And banning anyone suspected of being a stealth book reader with extreme prejudice. Preferably disappearing them from the non-reader thread with no announcement or explanation, and then if they complain about the ban they get permabanned. And posters who have recent reg dates and low post counts should basically not be allowed to post in the TV thread. Unfair? Maybe, whatever. As someone said, you not getting to post is a lot better than everyone getting spoiled.

+1

I think it's better then having 3 threads.

Man, I don't really think he should be banned for his use of the word bitch, but Swag is the one poster in the Survivor threads that I've always thought reads spoilers. The tone of his posts is the biggest reason imo.

Personal preferences bolded, they are really quite similar IMO

This is where mods would have to make a judgement call

Exactly, it then starts to mushroom out of control — who's allowed where, who said what, oops I posted in the wrong thread, and so on.

Not necessarily, mainly because

Definitely agree with this. With gimmicks and what-not, it could become simply a popularity contest, and wouldn't necessarily reach the best decision.

I believe what Gizmo was saying (and why she said you have no idea what you're talking about) is even with one post you have to open that thread, and that thread has MAJOR spoilers mentioned on every page. How many posts a known and admitted book reader has in either thread doesn't matter.

I think the most hilarious part of this is that people are throwing temper tantrums over 'spoilers' being posted for something that had its first installment of source material almost twenty years ago.

There should be a threshold for how long someone can complain about having something 'ruined' for them.

That threshold would pretty obviously include when a TV SHOW BASED ON THE SOURCE MATERIAL IS CURRENT AIRING AND A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO HAVEN'T READ THE BOOKS ARE WATCHING, WHICH IS WHY WE HAVE A THREAD FOR THAT POPULATION.

You should apologize to your fingers for making them type that post.

Nah, my fingers are totally cool with it.

Look, I've read the books. I'm watching the show. I would never wander into la-la land and post something concerning the books (which as far as I've seen you can't even mention exist without having someone jump down your throat). But if they're entitled to their 'the sky is falling, let's run around in circles!' attitude over every minute detail, I'm entitled to my chuckle as I watch them all bump into each other.

My point was more addressing the fact that the material has been out there for ages and ages, but yet you have people complaining vehemently that they Googled a character's name and spoilers appeared. The source material is scattered throughout the internet, and you can stumble across it at any time by even the most seemingly innocent search.

It's fine and all for there to be a TV-ONLY thread for it, I'm not saying that it should be gotten rid of, but if you care that much about not being spoiled, you probably shouldn't be on the internet (or at least anywhere that deals with the topic of GOT in any way, shape, or form) at all until you've read the books...

Did Gizmo actually spoil anything in the TV thread? I thought she just got hated on for talking about character x's age? I also assume she's the girl OPS referring to but didn't direcly mention. You made an ATF thread, might as well be specific.

If yes, shame on her for that, if not, then I see more of the typical misogynistic OOTV attitude toward. That **** definitely happens with certain female characters.

I am glad something is being done to curb it, specifically toward the female characters in OOTV which definitely bothered me.

So I definitely disagree that this was a case of white knightin going too far.

She just interfered in some speculation which lead non bookreaders to assume what they were speculating about wasn't going to happen (fwiw, it was a weak, minor speculation but def out of line, anyway).
