When you read old threads, a large number of active users at that time are now banned.

Were they banned for being scammers? Self-banned? Mouthing off to the mods? Obviously, it’s a combination of all those things but at the same time, that seems like an awful lot of previous users who fall into those categories.

Is poker just that full of degenerates that it’s just a matter of time before a good chunk of people are banned for shady things? Is there something else going on with these bans that I haven’t considered?

The old dogs at 2p2 banned a ton of compromised (not really) accounts when their database got hacked years ago or something like that. Almost all of the accounts you see in those old threads with the "banned" undertitle didn't actually get banned for any nefarious activity on the site.

Ohhhh ok, that makes sense. I thought maybe something had happened that I wasn’t aware of. Thanks!

There was also a lot of over reacting by mods. They used the ban hammer quite often when it wasn’t warranted.

I thought they didn't ban when the compromise happened, but rather they just forced a password reset?

I was permabanned over nonsense once

Most wouldn't care so they stay permabanned. I thought hard to get my account unbanned

I decline to answer this question because some mod might ban me due to not liking some minor thing about the way I answered it, them having not liked their breakfast or just for the lulz.

technically, yes. but mostly it's the last one. 20 years of ego driven modding. it continues today.

Reddit nailed this one, either by design or by accident.

It's filled with ego driven mods too. Often worse than 2p2 because they can do pretty much anything in their own subreddit.

But you only get banned from that one subreddit. And making a new account is trivial and nobody gives a ****. Reddit clearly turns a deliberate blind-eye to it.

So the punishment for pissing off some keyboard warrior mod one day is tiny.

On 2p2 you get a death sentence for it. The banning mod here will say good riddance, along with a lot of short sighted others. But 2p2 suffers from all of those banned users. Reddit thrives from all of them sticking around and continuing to contribute for years and years.

I'm always amazed that how many people apparently find it very difficult to avoid bans. It is trivially easy to avoid bans.

Banning people was the fashion at that time, some people were better at getting unbanned than others.
