I am probably doing something stupid but if I try to search using the advanced search page and set the "Find posts from" ie, date selection part, to anything less than the 1 month "and newer" drop down, the search never finds any threads or posts although they do exist.
If I do set it to 1 month and newer it does work.

Works (or rather doesn't) like that for me too.

Perhaps the searching is done against a (not so frequently updated) backup base or something?

See if google advanced search can find what you are looking for. This one should already have the site search filled out.

Yes it does and lots of them as for a test I am using a term that will be in very common use "variance".

If I use:
http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/search.php
and set the Keywors(s) variance
and have the drop down "Find Posts from" A Week Ago and newer

I get

The following errors occurred with your search:
1. Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms.

... but if I set the dropdown to "A Month Ago and newer", it works fine and gives me many results that are from the last few mins onward as I would expect.
