You're asking them to spend the money to redesign the whole site, *and* more money to do A/B testing, to prove it would be valuable for them to spend money to redesign the whole site?

That's begging the question.

The fact is, there's no evidence a redesign would be worth spending the money.

I interpreted your question as is a redesign generally worth it and the answer is always yes. Do I have specific evidence to support a redesign for this exact website? Of course I don't, but the benefits of redesigns and A/B testing is well documented. When a large organization seeks a redesign, they will never know if it ACTUALLY works until they have made the investment. Welcome to the real world.

All of this being said, yes, a redesign would be beneficial for this site. To state that I need evidence to support this claim is just plain silly.

By the way, I have never once asked for the site to be redesigned. I have simply stated that in my professional opinion the site would benefit from a redesign as the OP suggested.

It does, in that I didn't notice all of this activity on this thread. U did, ur a mod and monitor. I post to a lot of different groups on different topics. I usually get an email or some notification of interaction.
But adding to my thoughts on this generally..
I wonder why there is no "official" thread for improvements or thoughts and suggestions?
If there is? I haven't noticed it.
Seems like a great freeway to feedback.

To state that evidence is needed to support a claim, is silly?

I have several iotas, actually. Now, if only I could remember where I put them..... Gotta be around here somewhere.......

Seriously - if it ain't broke, why fix it? As already noted - look what happened to the NBCNews site!!

This site is stable, easy to navigate, and - from my perspective at least - user friendly. Why "redesign" what doesn't seem to need redesigning? Just for the heck of it? As an experiment to see IF the site is actually improved? Somehow, that doesn't seem right to me - and I've seen way too many examples of perfectly good websites redesigned into unusable junk.

You could start your own thread here in ATF, or post to this thread: http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/55...o-t-chat-1494/

This thread is it. Thread title is fine, imo. It's specifically about the web-site appearance itself. Other forms of development can be in other threads.

I did not state that evidence needed to support a claim is silly. I stated that expecting me to gather evidence for this specific site, time spent for which I would benefit myself in absolutely no way, is silly. I don't mean to sound rude, but do I have to spell everything out for you?

For everyone who is skeptical of the benefits of a redesign: I would just like to outline a few points. Keep in mind that this is not a sales pitch. My services are not being requested, so I won't go into great detail. You can learn much more about this sort of thing on Google.

The point of a redesign is not to completely change how a website looks (although this does occasionally happen). The point of a redesign is to alter the layout of a website as to improve the end user experience. This usually involves tweaking one small area of the site and then running tests to see if the tweak actually made a positive impact on the site.

For example, let's take the NBC News re-design. With such a large site (whose work was likely outsourced to a very large design firm), I can almost guarantee every single change was done for a reason. Maybe the goal of the redesign was to get more stories clicked on. All of a sudden it is hard NOT to click on a story when each one has a large image, attractive header, plenty of space (drawing attention), and quite frankly has become the most prominent action on the page! While the new NBC News site may seem like a downgrade for most of you who have used it for a while and learned how to extract the most information out of it, to understand why the change was made you must think from the perspective of a new user. For a new user, the new site is out-of-this-world better.

I don't believe that a redesign is necessary, nor do I believe that it would benefit the majority of users. Of course, I am right and you are wrong. I don't need to research my opinion (using Google or anything else), that would be a silly waste of time. (I just love being 100% correct!)

I had never heard of that site before that post.
Took a look and my eyes instantly felt better.
Like I could focus on something.

I don't have anything really against the forum software.
But I can see the pixelation on cards on the masthead.
And expanding and collapsing forums is in the lower lefthand
corner of my brain, not front and center.

If people don't want to change? Fine.
But it isn't working for some, and I'm one.
And if someone with Sklansky bucks wants to do something
they will.

So you didn't read any of the user responses to the change did you...

Looks like another opportunity for a poll??? Should we update????

There's the answer, then the why, and most importantly, the HOW!!

IMHO, I think it's fine and has served many well over the years. Just need a little graphic posting update so images don't have to be downloaded first. Would be more user friendly in that way.

like i said before, i'm not that keen on changing up on the BBS software.
I've done enough due dilligence on linux/ms to deal with it.
But someone needs to take a break, and look at the graphics around it.
I think $250 of time@ $25 and hour for PHP/ CSS/HTML5 coding
would keep the sidebar graphics re-sizing correctly.

I may switch gears or styles later. The use of fragments, may feel clunky, but I hope that those reading these comments on a smaller second screen appreciate it. I'll try and insert more bullets and headers in the future, when I take the time to figure out how.

Isn't there a setting on here where you can get notification of responses? If there is and you aren't using it......

Great idea! And maybe there could be a way to have the explanation for that setting be a post that sticks to the top of the forum so that everyone would know to read it first. Sticks to the top... I know, we could it a "Stickie"! And that way folks could learn about such things.

Of course, one would have to get folks to actually read the "Stickies" first.....
