wat

"I've played 12 hours a day for 2 years, and now only play at my local B&M. I've played from .2/4 on up, to 10/20 and lost thousands of dollars, and won that much back. Anyone who generally either support poker sites, is either, a moderator from the site, or someone who doesn't lose that much online and is basically a fish (or small timer)."
seriously wat

^This really needs more love:

"IF you play any level of poker and are dilgent about your winnings, loses, and can track probability and statistics, and have an understanding that online poker is harder, due to crackpots, playing junk hands, or chasing , etc, and you can pay close attention,, and chart individual players, then forget it,, spend $20 on a movie and popcorn."

good thread, i can't believe I read the whole thing... oh wait, i'm in exams, of course I read the whole thing.

I can see the point made by many but I disagree with one recurring element. You're worried what people think of you so you want to lie about your job. Do you want to know what would make me thing you're an f'n weirdo? When I find out you lied about your job.

The key is to not lie. Equity analyst FTW!

I tell people I play poker so I can make fun of them for their measly $10/hr jobs they have. I explain to them that I make more than them on $rakeback/hr than they do at their job. Then I tell them that I like to flip for tens and tens of dollars where its almost no money to me. I also like to mention my serious swings of losing a thousand dollars in one day and I could hardly be mentally hurt. They usually think its a joke and laugh...maybe it is.

the fact that a lot of my friends have $10/hour jobs is a major reason why i do NOT talk to them about poker.

lol...my friends and I are terrible to each other and we make fun of each other for every possible thing. I have several friends who play poker and make just as much as me if not more. But I do have friends who still act like poker is pure gambling and all luck, to these people I always act like an ass to (AFTER EXPLAINING HOW POKER WORKS AND THEY STILL DON'T BELIEVE ME).

"So how much have you lost?"

That's the only question I get from the parents.

I just like to keep it simple and say I play for play money.

Ok, it finally happened to me.

I was in a bowling alley telling him about my online poker; how many tables I play, bankroll management, etc. He listened for a while, and then he said, "Make sure they don't catch you, online poker is illegal you know."

I said that was interesting, since the IRS doesn't think so, and that Tom Dwan, Phil Ivey et. al. haven't been arrested for playing for six figure pots on Full Tilt. He just looked at me sadly, before we both went where we had to go--to the poker room to sign up for the tournament.

Christ. I thought this was just an inside joke of the poker world. I did not realise, that this is actually literally the first reaction of 90% of the people.

"But how much did you lose."

Yeah, I will never tell anyone again. This is ****ing scary.

I also got a roommate who walks in all the time and asks "How are you doing - up or down?" Gets pretty annoying actually - dont know why

He too asked "if you get 50$ can you make it 200$?"

Its funny how it is the same things people ask - it must say that if you ask these quistions you dont have to be stupid.

I can't really avoid questions, as too many friends and acquaintances know that I haven't had a real job for a year or so (auto accident, employer going out of business and other fun reasons), and are genuinely concerned.

After grinding my way up the levels single-tabling, I finally taught myself to multi-table a month ago. Now, since people don't understand or believe the explanations anyway, soon I'll be able to keep it simple: I make more per month [so they know that I don't mean one big score] playing poker than I ever have doing anything else.

Then, if they have questions and I think they might understand/believe the answers, we can go from there.
