That's why you should always sleep with your money.

The Rio is one dodgy place. I know of several people who have had various stuff go missing from their rooms....

Ok, #1: Housekeeping doesn't come in at night...
So, on two different occasions I've been party to having uninvited people get into a room, and once I was on the other end of the equation. Once when my wife and I were staying somewhere, someone clearly unlocked and entered the door but then left without saying a word.
On another occasion, staying near Arlingtone Cemetary in Virginia, was given a key, used it and ran smack dab into the physical latch, with the lights and TV on in the room. I was mistakenly given a key and reservation to an already occupied room.
I would put forward this is what happened. You may want to check if the front desk will admit to accidentally trying to double book your room. It still sounds unlikely, but housekeeping doesn't usually operate at that time.
...and for everyone, ALWAYS physically latch your door...it may be a total accident with no malice, but best to prevent it from happening.

Bet you left the door wide open or at least not shut
