If you were doing this in a vacuum and could throw 80, this would be easy. With drag, it'll be close.

Because throwing 100 yards straight up through water would be ridiculous.

Physics can help with calculations for a horizontal throw as well. Assuming the ball is thrown at a 45 degree angle (which maximizes distance if there is no air resistance), then we can look at the horizontal and vertical velocity components separately, and each is equal to sqrt(1/2) times the original velocity (close to 0.7x). If you can throw 80mph (*at a 45 degree angle*!), then the ball will be going up at about 56mph and away at 56mph at the same time, or about 82 ft/sec (in each dimension).
To reach the ground again, the ball will have to go to the top of its arc and acquire a negative vertical velocity equal to the initial positive one. At 32ft/sec/sec, this will take ((82+82)/32) = 5.125 seconds. During that time, the ball will have traveled 82*5.125=420 feet or 140 yards.
So before taking into account air resistance and the rather difficult mechanics of trying to throw a ball full-speed at 45 degrees, this looks possible. But air resistance isn't actually negligible and throwing at such an angle is probably damn hard without practice, so I would still bet against you.

because it cant go 70 in the air and then roll 30.

The bet is to throw the ball from one goal line to the other goal line on the fly

it's 50/50, but 81mph means you're probably going to come up short.

OP if you can actually throw the ball 80mph (~35 meters per second) you should be fine. Remember to get max distance you should throw the ball at a 45 degree angle to the ground.

Neglecting air resistance the ball would be up for 5.1 seconds and go 127.5 meters (92 is 100 yds). Taking air resistance from that I think youll still be ok

With air resistance the optimal angle is <45 degrees.

throwing 80 in high school is a lot different than 2 years later after not playing and no you cant do it oh well at least you will get to drink some of the keg after you tear your labrum

Using the equations of motion the distance the ball will travel
d= (speed^2)/2*acceleration due to gravity
d= (35*35)/19.6

which is 62m or like 65 yards

to reach 100 yards you would need to pitch at 210mph....lol
Time for a refresher course...

Alright, more physics then. I'll skip the calculations but assuming no air resistance and optimal trajectory, with an 80 mph throw you can go around 425 ft. Here's the equation:

Air resistance can be pretty damn big though.

Well wikipedia was nice enough to calculate the air resistance of a baseball as k = 0.0431 kg/s.

0.145 kg * 118 ft/s * cos 30 / 0.0431 = 344 ft.

Sounds plausible if you actually can throw the ball at 80 mph

I thought air resistance would have been more.. never looked up the equations though.. 30 degrees is the optimal angle??

Wrong handed ftl. Also this is probably obvious but see if you can get a little tail wind. So don't choose which end you are throwing from until you see which way the wind is blowing. There has to be a hustle in here somewhere as well.

I hope you don't try to do this cold. Make sure you toss the ball around a bit before your official throws.
