If you are publishing a book, be aware that it costs practically nothing. This includes publishing a print book (available on Amazon), and distributing to major ebook stores. You can do everything yourself, however, it's probably best to outsource some things. You can buy decent cover art for $30-150, you can get formatting done for $30-50. The only other expense is editing, that's the most labor intensive part. You can get decent copyediting for $500-1000. There'll be companies that do all-in-one deals and charge a lot more, but most of them are a waste of money. If you want links or places to look, let me know.

Simply use LaTeX for the formatting of your book and save that $50.

Easy enough to format in other software like Word (and that's what I'd do), but if someone doesn't want to spend the time and energy figuring out how best to format, then spending a bit of money might be worthwhile. A major advantage of formatting yourself is that you can easily make changes afterword (if typos are found) and reupload the document.

As I said, you can have a print book available on Amazon for free. Format yourself, do up a cover on photoshop, don't bother with editing (or get a friend to do it) and off you go. However, it might be worth investing in formatting/cover/editing depending on your goals and quality expectations.

When I originally looked into cost for everything including printing 200 copies, I came up with a $5k figure. I'm not to savvy in this field and based it off this site. www.pbs.org/mediashift/2013/05/the-real-costs-of-self-publishing-book/ I went with low end and checked out quotes on 200 copies from printing sites. I will probably end up going the cheaper route myself and using Amazon and the e-book distribution idea. For right now I need to get the body of work done, then I'm sure I'll be asking you for insight. Thanks for the input.
