I must have missed this reply when I read the thread the first time. I've been a bowler for over a decade and I'll second this, it plays exactly as a foul would, and the automatic scorekeeper is edited to reflect a miss. In a typical day at an alley this occurs many times, you'd think it would be a better-known rule.
Then again, many wagers have been lost throughout history as a result of ignorance of complete rulesets. There's a big thread in B&M about that...
