So many people here say "I used to have the same problem"....I'm a firm believer that the problem never leaves you, and that its a constant uphill battle that you'll probably be dealing with the rest of your life. Just know that you're not alone. The people that enjoy these stories so much actually enjoy them because they can relate and appreciate them more than the average joe. That's why GA supposedly works so well, it's a bunch of people who get together and have the same thing in common, and for some reason relating to others, knowing you're not alone, is comforting.

Also, I know you said you weren't religious, but you really might be able to find some peace in meditation and prayer. Even if its praying to yourself or some God you make up in your head, just talking about your thoughts out loud to yourself before you go to sleep might do wonders for you.

PM me if you wanna talk man. I'm struggling just like you. Every day is a battle. <3

Several years ago, I was working at the Duty Free shop at Logan airport, had some vacation time saved up, and decided I would make a poker trip down to Foxwoods. I took a week off, so with my regular days, I had 9 consecutive days off. I had just gotten my income tax refund checks and cashed a paycheck (I’ll pay rent later!), so I was really rolling in the doughs.

BR ~1500

I booked a room for 5 days. In my delusional head, I knew I wasn’t going to be staying there for 5 days though… I was going to be staying there FORRRR-EVVVVER! Or at least until I decided to move to AC or Vegas. I was finally rolled deep enough to go pro!

I took the bus down. (Which is a great deal btw. At the time you got a buffet coupon and a keno match play, so you’re really already a winner imo) Checked into my room at the Two Trees Inn, which is the only hotel NOT connected to the casino (Baller!) and took a little nap. Woke up, it’s about 9 or 10 PM at this point, and with the most casual of strolls, made my way to the poker room. I decide to start my trip off nice and easy.
The room was something like 100/night, paid for the first two nights up front. Bus was like 35 for the one way ticket I think. My thought process was something like this: “Think I’ll play some 4-8 limit. After I run up a stack there, I’ll figure out whether I want to bankrupt the 1-2 NL Regs or Win some tournaments.”

NIGHT 1

So I sit down with $200 in front of me, $400 more in my pocket. Since I’m just playing 4-8 limit, I decide I’ll have a drink or two or three or blackout. I obviously don’t remember many specifics, but I lost $600. Losing half my roll is somewhat secondary in this story.

BR ~750

There was a girl at my table that I think was kind of cute, and it turned out that she was stuck at the casino until the morning for whatever reason, and she was also admittedly tired. That window is called opportunity. We got to talking and I got to hitting on her. You’re likely wondering, “Did he even remotely have a chance?” Much like this whole “Going Pro” trip in general, I probably started with a chance. Maybe I only could have convinced her that I wasn’t going to attack her in some way and got her back to my room so she could sleep until the morning, but I probably get at least a make-out session and maybe some dry humping out of pity/gratitude. Needless to say, she did not end up back at my room at the never self-proclaimed Most Ballerest: Two Trees Inn.

Also worth noting is the manner in which my night ended. I wasn’t in a great mood by the time I lost the last of the money I had at the table with me and I was on the border of blackout and drunk. My thought process was as follows: “I’m playing perfect poker! They are all getting lucky! I can’t believe they aren’t serving alcohol anymore! Damn Fascists!”

So when I lose my last hand, I take my cards, and throw them 20-40 feet. The dealer calls for the floor, and I’m walking out before the cards hit the floor.

DAY 2

At this point, if I do stay the entire 5 days, I have like $400 left to gamble with. I make sure that I can cancel days on my reservation w/o penalty, which frees up another 300 for me. I can eat the crap food they have with my rewards points, so food isn’t a concern.

Obviously, during my second day at the ‘Woods I lost the most of the rest of my bankroll. Think I left myself about 80 “just in case” dollars back at my room, so I went back to my room to enjoy the amenities. That day was already paid for, so I figured I might as well enjoy my room. At some point reality smacks me around and I realize that not only was my plan (or lack thereof) terrible, but that my execution was at least as bad. I realize that I am watching cable TV in a hotel room at Foxwoods because I’ve managed to lose all the money I had brought with me, which was in fact all the money I had to my name.

BR ~$80

The last $80 dollars was for my bus ticket home and some food and coffee or whatever. Since I have been making nothing but the best of decisions, I decide to sit at 2-4 LHE, and gamble with the non-essential money. Of course when I say gamble, what I think I mean is “play with an edge because I is a monster and a pro”. Shouldn’t really surprise anyone that I lost all the get home money I had.

BR Exactly –ZERO-

This is the point where I became acutely aware of the problem that was unsolvable: I would have to call someone, friend or (GOD NO!) family, and ask them to wire me $40. My aunt sends me the money, and it’s going to be like an hour or two before I can board the bus, so I lose that money at 2-4 LHE. Not to be a Debbie Downer, but now I’m really not looking forward to making the next phone call(s) that I have to make, unless I want to walk to Boston.

I get a friend of mine to loan me the money, and this time I actually go and buy the ticket and go home.
Variance: I was living just outside of Boston with my girlfriend at the time, which makes my failed attempt at picking up a random scummy and embarrassing.

FWIW i was pretty degen until my daughter was born, i think that is a watershed moment for a lot of degens, certainly me and a load of pals have all given up vices or majorly cut down at this point in our lives.

My main trouble is that if i lose gambling it sits on my credit card / overdraft and the wife doesnt know.......when i win i cant help myself telling her and the winnings end up spent!!

I don't usually play blackjack or any other pit games, when I do it's usually at the tail end of a session with an irrelevant amount of cash while I smoke a couple cigarettes and have a drink or two before heading up to my room to sleep.

So I sit down with $40 at the table. About an hour later, somehow I have $400.

Two hours later, I'm up to $2000.

They start going through random dealer changes, deck changes, etc.

Three hours later, I'm up to $5000.

Up until now the most I'd put on one hand was $150. I start betting $500 a hand. Ten minutes late, I'm up to $8000 from $40. The floormen are all looking at me like they think I have to be card counting, like a counter is going to come in and start betting nickels and go on this kind of run.

One of the floor even mildly attempts to back me off, asking me if I'd want to try another game. So in my head, I start thinking, **** it I'm just going to keep winning until I get kicked out for it.

I lost all of it in twenty minutes.

And that, my friends, is why my poker buddies all have standing orders to run up and clip me full force in the face if they catch me sitting down at the pit games with more than a buyin with a drink in my hand, the only time such behavior would be allowed.

I don't have any poker degen stories, just bad beat stories, and I'm really not interested in hearing **** from a bunch of bull**** weak/tight breakeven rakeback pros saying OMG WHAT AN IDIOT SITTING DOWN WITH 5% OF YOUR BR AT THE TABLE AND BITCHING ABOUT GETTING FELTED BY 1 OUTER LOL WHAT BAD BRM JUMP STAKES MORE U DONK.

Just put a lot of volume.
Read couple of books, watch video, get coaching and you should be fine.

I have some other boring, bad BRM stories, but I don't think they are BBV material. Don't want to be like Chappelle in Half Baked when he is complaining about his weed addiction.

Feel like I should point out that I'll be degening at Aquasino (which as you might be able to guess is a casino cruise). Boat leaves at 11am, betting starts at 1230. I should have just over 5 hours, not sure how much degening I can do in 5 hours. Hopefully none I guess?

Blackjack with my Poker Stack– The Pump and Dump

The second time I noticed this pattern of play, I knew I was doing something right and then doing something wrong. No attempts to count the cards, but a feeling from trying sense the inpending outcome of the next hand. On both occasions I was able ‘beat’ the first dealer until they rotated, then the cold-decking is delivered at the hands of the second dealer, usually some stone-faced woman in her mid forties who is short on humor and long on hard stares and cusp remarks. All this is perversely exciting and mysteriously intriguing, so I feel that taking on the game of Blackjack is much like a having either a crack addiction or being raped by a 800 pound gorilla; this game decides when it’s done with you and not vice v3rsa. That is precisely why I feel bad about my bad poker discipline, engaging in non-plus EV games of chance. There is an excuse for that, I simply lost patience with the waiting list for 2/5 NL at the brand new poker room at MD Live. I started donking on 5c/25c/50c/$1 slots, trying to reproduce a recent jackpotting success at Charles Town, which is a magic story itself…basically me calling the jackpot (like Babe Ruth) on the 2nd-to-last spin while my mom was tugging at my shoulder to leave. “Nickels mom, these machines are heating up, I can feel it!” I was down to my last five dollars, when I hit for 1500, Like a Boss. But back to the Blackjack, I can tell you it was Pump and Dump with my chips, I build a big stack of during the first dealer, second round I get it air-lifted. Is it not knowing when to stop and walk away? Perhaps, the only way to win is not to play.

TL;DR:
Got impatient with long waiting list.
Played Blackjack with poker money
Beat the first dealer!
wiped by the second
Didn’t profit
Kicker: Missed the train and had to take the bus
Bad beat: Missed the bus and had to call a cab, which I barely had cash left to cover
Win?: Great play experience. Honing experience into skill.

I was ready to sit down and watch the whole thing but only made it 10 minutes due to the high cringe factor. Asking the whales 'but how much did u lose' over and over again isn't going to produce much in the way of insight. Did you watch more than 10 min?

I watched the whole thing. It wasn't that bad. I like Louis even though he doesn't have a clue about gambling/casinos. He actually did get his gamble on in the end and it sort of ended positively, though there was a clear agenda throughout.
