I owed the irs + credit cards approximately 14k with the bulk being to the irs and we know they don't mess around. I didn't even have money to deposit into a poker account, had to wait for payday. Times were so rough I had to, at the age of 27, move back in with the folks. Told myself that for the next year or so I'll work this unbearable job and save as much as I can playing poker hopefully I'll be debt free in two years to start over again. Figuring since I have no rent to pay , and make about 20k after taxes, heck a year maybe if I run well. I finally save up 20 for a deposit, go busto, do that for a few weeks on each payday 20 dollars until finally i catch a run, next thing I know its June and i'm at the final table in the sunday millions just busting out 7th for 23.5k.

Off 20 dollars and a dream, in 2 months i went from a 27 year old single, unwanted loser in debt and living at home with his parents to a proud 27 year old unwanted winner out of debt and living the dream while in his parents guest room. Sweet.
Well played sir.

Actually, I bet on them twice. I was offered like 15:1 odds on them beating the Titans on Thanskgiving and figured hey, there was always a chance DanO just throws it to Calvin Johnson over and over and he dominates the game somehow. So I threw up ~$132 on them (whatever it was to bank $2k if I won). Looking at it now there the only way Detroit could win that game is if Tennessee somehow got disqualified, and they lost 47-10. That made me sour but when I was offered a line of +17 on the Lions against the Colts I thought "hey, they're not THAT bad" and put a hundred on them, and when they only lost by 10 I doubled up. Then the Saints game came up and I just knew the Saints would destroy the Lions' crappy defense. The line was -14 on the Saints but it should have been like -30. I put my entire Players Only roll on it and the Saints win by 37, booyah. Then put all my winnings on the Panthers (-10) to beat the Cardinals in the playoffs - I really wanted the Cards to win, but I just couldn't see anyway it could happen, until Delhomme tossed 5 interceptions and I tossed cookies all over the carpet. Was a nice ride...

Probably not the right thread for this but whatever. I lost my job today. a ****ty retail one so i don't feel that bad about it but a little bit bad because i have bills and such. Threw my soda all over the manager though, made me feel a little better. Anyway i'm wondering how realistic it is to make $1k a month, which is all i need until august (or i find another job). I've been able to make about $400 a month playing Double or Nothing SNG's about 20 hours a week, but is this something i can rely on? If i have a lot of time, what is the easiest, least variance route? I'm not looking for the big score, just enough to get by. Thanks for your help everyone.

I was 10 tablin the 6 dollar sng's with a 100 dollar BR and got it up to 1k in a month, there is variance, but those games are soft enough to where you can do it. If you are on stars, you can use the points you earn to play the 750k sat where you'll win 11 dollars. I actually pulled everything out of my account and grinded until i turned 1k points into about 1k dollars, took me about a month part time. I have a friend that has done a similar feat with points 3 times. If you are going to play the double or nothing's, you better get good at multi tabling them hardcore to raise up a grand, I can imagine its high variance as well but I've never played them.

May of 2006 I decided I'd had enough of the LV heat for a while and moved to Vancouver BC. I've got friedns and family in the North West and thought it would be fun to bum around for the summer. I put my stuff in storage and loaded up my car.

Shortly before this poker became my only income and I still had some BR issues. I didn't have many expenses so I wasn't too worried. Anyway I lucked into a $2/5 PL O8 game at the River Rock in Richmonmd BC where most people didn't know how to play omaha hi/lo let alone pot limit. The game only went for 6 weeks or so before all the fish went broke and it became a $5-10 limit game. So I was off looking for better games.

A couple of months later I had spent through most of my money and needed some income. My buddie told me about a $30-60 full kill limit holdem game at spirit mountian in Oregon. It only ran on monday nights so and he said he would steak me for half or loan me whatever. I drove the 7 hours to the casino and got on the list for the game. He met me there and we each put up $1000 (I was all in at this point so I HAD to win). The game started at 7 and I didnt ge in untill 9 or 10. It only ran for about 2 hours before we were 3 handed and about 3 hours after that it broke. I won almost $3000 which we split leaving me $2500 or so. I won a couple hundred more playing Chineese in the room from my friend and left in the morning to go back.

I made it as far as La Center, WA where there are 4 ****ty little casinos where I first played poker in high school (they are 18 and over but didn't card us back then). I figured I stop for lunch and see what they had going. $10-20 Limit was the biggest game they could spread by law at that time and they had a couple of games going. I failed to adjust my short hand play to a 10 player game full of drooling idiots and out leveled myself out of a couple racks. I then got cold decked and tilted off $1500 more.

Finally I pulled out my last $200. It was about 11:00pm. I knew that was enough for gas and food and figured I should just go home. I was sad... then I got mad I couldn't just go home. I told myself I didn't deserve to go home. I told myself that if I lost $2800 in that $10-20 game I may as well kill myself. So I made a promise to myself that I wouldn't leave La Center untill I had won the money back. I would do whatever it took. I would have friends and family wire me money or live im my car and get a job, whatever.

I felt relaxed and calm. I wasn't worried about the money anymore or how long my lunch break had taken. I knew that the only thing I had to do was win. So with my new game plan I played as good as I knew how and by the time the casino closed at 4:00am I had aobut $700. It re-opened at 8:00 so i got in the back of my car and slept till 8. I go up brushed my teeth in the parking lot with a bottle of water washed my face in the bathroom and got on the list. All that was running was a $3-6 game so thats what i played. I got on a heater and won $400 or so in that game before the $10-20 game started at 4 or 5. I kept my heater going in the $10-20 game too. By the time the casino closed at 4:00am I had about $1900. Got in my car and went to sleep the next morning I did the same thing. By 6:00pm that night I had won all the money back plus about $80.

Not the most Degen but it has stuck with me. I learned a lot from that.

MOST DEGEN
I lost $10,000 playing black jack one nigh when I had $10,800 to my name. That was like 2003 when I first moved to Vegas.
I approve of this degening. A+

I just degened my bankroll. Kept moving up a step in the HU tournies because I couldn't win with the best hand. Finally busted the rest almost all of my roll with 99 vs 66. Started out losing $5 with AA vs A8 all in pre-flop. Kept climbing until I lost $800ish, then took the rest to a cash hu table and busted the rest first hand. Does that qualify enough for degen? Lol, trying to get back $5 and losing $800?
**** it

Yes! finally I qualify as degen instead of whatever I was called earlier lol.
Now most of my FPP's are gone too. I'm down to my last tournament and I'll only have 26FPP's. ****ing ayyy... I've got a lot of rebuilding work to do, and perhaps I should follow bankroll management 100% of the time, instead of 80% or so. **** it, **** it, **** it. I'm out of a job soon too since I'm graduating, and I'll have no source of income until I can actually find a job in this crazy economy. I've gotta build a roll again.

*22 fpp's... woops.

And I lose against an idiot in my last tournament too. Q10 suited is always > KK Lol... I love poker! I'm going to go crazy. I.e., finished playing until May20th or so I think. Not sure how I'll make money or get money to start again, but whatever. I really don't want to have to throw $650 down on black and listen to Enya while I plead for a double up.

This is my degen story from 2004: I was/am a winning player but had busto'd my tanks. A friend was letting me use his party account to rebuild a roll, playing mostly 5/10 and 10/20 limit. One night I came home riotously drunk and decided to play poker, so I fired up party poker and sat a table of 2k plo (i'd never played plo online before and had never played those limits before). I made a couple of ridiculous stack-offs to get up to 8k, before busting that and the other 14k in the tank.

Happy ending: I never played drunk again, and believe I probably lost less in one big hit than I would have continually playing drunk.

I got everyone beat, I have 3 poker accounts and they are each bigger than my bank account with no plans of withdrawing any of it.

People ask me why I choose to live broke when I always have so much on all my tables. My answer:

GO BIG OR GO HOME

Lol yeah I remember when I had nothing in the bank, was living off like $10 a day runs to 7-11, and was playing 25nl and 50nl but for some reason had 8500 in my poker account....withdrawing is painful, because then you look at your smaller account and feel like you've had a big losing sesssion.
