At this point my seriousness must be bordering on comical, but I have a respect for the stories in this thread and from what I saw, this one has nothing about it that rings as false.

To answer your questions:

1. Yes, it was in Michigan. Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Same city as Central Michigan University and Soaring Eagle Casino.

2. My plan was to buy Faygo, but that night Pepsi products were on sale 4/$12 or something like that. I just had to buy different kinds (hence the Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, and Mountain Dew in the cart)

Is the picture gone? I'll go back and check after I post this, but I thought it was still there. I'll repost it if not.

I know there's a delay now, I wasn't aware of it at the time though. I wasn't willing to take a chance since I once deposited on FT when I didn't have the money there and they ended up disabling that deposit option for me.

well, i'll let fmk give a thorough and articulate response to this, but since this is the degen thread, i thought i'd share my first pro bridge experience, and, for once in my life, i wasnt the degen.

a guy hired me to play on a team with him to help him achieve the rank of life master (which is a huge achievement for the casual player; most players never reach it) at a nearby tournament. He paid for my room and board and some additional extra plus bonuses for doing well, which is pretty unremarkable as far as bridge pros go. totally standard.

i later found out, though, that the client was on a disability-related fixed income, and me playing bridge with him for a few days was equivalent to a few months of his government checks. i wasn't so thrilled that i cost this guy several weeks of his medication, but i'm happy to report that he made life master with room to spare. don't really know what happened to him but i saw him a few times afterwards and he seemed like he was doing pretty good in life. good for him.

Awesome! Might have to get into bridge too then, probably have more talent for it than poker. I used to be really good playing spades

online, I assume the concepts are quite similar ?

Yeah bridge is the nuts. Spades and bridge are very similar, but bridge is way more nuanced, complex, and imo interesting and exciting.

If you're serious about learning, come post in the Puzzles and Other Games bridge thread. Posters in that thread rank from world champions to complete novices, so all levels are pretty well represented.

I thought with the amount of tournaments now offering you chances at gold points, silver points, etc, any decent player good achieve life master if they have the time and desire to put in the volume. Is this no longer true?

Yeah, for anyone with some card sense (especially young people) with plenty of time and money, LM isn't really an enormous accomplishment. Bridge ratings aren't like chess; your rating can only go up no matter how bad you are.

Only 1 in 3 American Contract Bridge League members have 500 or more masterpoints (the new requirement for LM), so it's obvious that reaching LM isn't a walk in the park. It used to be a lot harder decades ago, but it's good for the game to let people feel like they accomplished something.

I made LM when I was 15. It took me about 4 years playing semi-regularly. FMK made it when he was like 12. Recently a kid made it at the age of 9, which is quite remarkable given he doesn't come from a bridge-playing family.

So yes, your point is valid. With enough time, money, and desire it's not that hard, but most people don't have all three, and to them it can be quite a challenge.

Probably best not to derail this thread too much further. If you guys want to ask questions or hear stories or get tournament TRs or something, might be a good idea to start a new thread somewhere.

Pretty creepy how he sounds like a lunatic throughout the whole thing, but ends with "keep grind on the mind" and sounds completely normal.
