Do you know anyone whose life was ruined by gambling? This can be a dangerous addiction. Any older guys here who have seen the damage done by addicted gambling instead of just working a normal steady job?

Even if you win big, if you're the type of person who is attracted to gambling in the first place, and are the risk seeking type, you will not change overnight just b/c of a few new zeros in your bank account. They WANT the action. That's WHY they have $2m winnings. People do not change. Lottery winners keep buying tickets!!

I am neither a poker player or a gambler. I don't care what people do, but I like hearing stories of human behavior. I just play poker on my phone for fun. People here have to know some crazy gambling disasters of people they've known at one point.

Has anyone read a good in-depth book about life as a gambler? I would like to read it and follow the rollercoaster life it must be. Nightmarish, on some levels.

Here are some videos I liked. Got any to share?

Anyone ever watch Owning Mahowny?

This may not be the place for you. Not a self help or life advice thread. More of a shared commiseration/mutual schadenfreude type deal that is hard to get unless you have been there.

This is pretty long.

Back in 2010 I needed $1500 in 10 days to pay the rent or I was getting evicted. Only had $40 to my name and nothing in the fridge to eat. Medical bills and recently getting laid off were the cause of me falling behind

Took the $40 and went to pokerstars. Multi tabled the micros and doubled it in about a day. Moved up and lost half of it. Went back to the micros and doubled it again, moved up and again lost half. Said f it and took my $40 and started pushing all in stealing blinds. Kept doing it until I was up $55. Got JJ and just called another player pushed all in and I called. He showed AA and I started praying to god for a miracle. I caught a J on the river. He called me a "stupid fk" and I just said "have a good sir" and immediately got off the table.

Day 3

Up around $110 and everything started going good. Multi tabled and finished with $270 after a 12 hour session to end the night.

Day 4

Another good day of multi tabling finishing with a $480 bankroll, but I knew that time was running out.

Day 5

Landlord calls in the morning wondering when he'll get the rent and I told him "you'll get it, I'm in the zone right now so please call back in a few days". I wasn't in the zone that day because after 5 hours of multi tabling, I was down to $250. I said to myself time was running out so I stopped multi tabling and sat at a high no limit table with the remaining bank roll. Played tight for awhile until I pushed all in with kings and they held up against someone with 10's. Bank roll was now $610. I figured I didn't have much time left so I am just going to go for it today. Stayed at the table for around 2 hours more and did pretty well. I finally picked up pocket Kings. So I just call and someone raises, I think for a minute and re raise, villain goes all in and my heart starts racing as I insta call. He shows Queens and we both hit 3 of a kind on the flop! I ended up taking the entire pot and now have a bank roll of $1590!!

I immediately sit out and the player that lost the hand says "yeah go ahead and run you pssy, you are complete garbage and you play like Obama". I started trash talking back to him and next thing you know other players at the table wanted to see me and him play heads up. I don't know how it got to that point. I was so pumped up that I wasn't thinking. All of the players wanted to see both of us play heads up so they all sat out and watched.

He had $2800, I had $1590. It pretty much went back and forth for an hour until I i caught a heater. Pocket jacks and took a nice pot off of him to stack my bankroll to about $1800. Got pocket 7's a few hands later and took another nice pot off of him to stack my bankroll to $2300. I thought to myself, "this is more than enough and will leave the table after a few more hands". I immediately caught pocket aces and bet a nice size, he raises, I re raise and he pushes all in! My heart is racing and I'm ecstatic! He shows Queens and nothing hits on the flop but he hits a Queen on the turn AND the river! I cannot explain to you how I was feeling after that beat. My mind was torn and filled with panic, anger and frustration.

So I had less than $100 left and he immediately sits out and leaves. Players that were watching at the table were laughing and saying how sick that was. I'm just sitting there trying to figure out what the hell just happened. It just didn't make sense to me. So I leave the computer for a few hours to clear my head and come back and I only have about $60.00 in my account. I wasn't going to multi table again because there wasn't enough time and I was tired so I put $50 on a 27 player sit and go and busted out of it pretty quickly. I then said to myself "that's it" and turned off the computer. I turned off all the lights and tried to go to sleep, but I all I could think of was me not getting the hell off the table when I had the money. It was the worst feeling ever. I could barely function at that point.

Day 6

I knew there was no way in hell I was going to be able to come up with the money in time so I started started packing my stuff to move it into a friends storage. I didn't have any family and the few friends I had, they had kids and no room for me to stay there, so I was getting prepared to sleep in a shelters until I could find another job.

Day 7

Land lord starts calling again reminding me of payment and I didn't even answer at that point despite calling like 5 times. No reason too. I had everything packed up except for my computer. So I start getting the box together to load it into and I remembered I had to print off a few things. I boot up the pc and I see the pokerstars program on the desktop screen. I didn't want to see that logo ever again, so I click on it and log in just to contact pokerstars and tell them that I no longer want my account and to close it for good. Looks like I had to contact them by email. Was going to close the program, but I clicked on the cashier to see if I had anything left just for the hell for it. It showed I had $6 and some change. I didn't even know I had anything left, so I saw there was a $10 mtt no rebuy about to start in about 15 minutes. I didn't have enough so I sat at a micro nl table and got it to $12.

I registered the last of the money I had and I said to myself "my life is pretty much on this game right here". I was playing pretty well for the first hour and it showed that first place wins $3700. I didn't think about the money, I just knew that I had to play the best game I had. I started taking down pots left and right and moving my way up until I hit a few scary bumps to the point where I nearly went busto.

Break time had came so I went outside and pulled out a cig, took deep breaths and kept saying "i can't lose this". Came back and began getting it together. Blinds were getting high and I started drowning. I was dealt K10 and pushed all in and got insta called by someone with AQ and another with pocket 10's. I yelled "THIS IS IT". Flop came A Q 10. Turn is a 6 and the river is a JACK!!! I take the entire pot and from that very moment, I RAN LIKE GOD! I swear I couldn't miss a single hand. Every hand I had was a winner. You had to see it to believe how well I ran. I got all the way to the final table and won 1st place!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I cried like a baby and was yelling in joy at the top of my lungs as I ran around the house nonstop for a good 15 minutes. A month later I found another job and am now caught up on all of my medical bills.

That was BY FAR the happiest day of my life and this is my degen story

This weekend, I went to the casino and played poker. Won some money and then I left. No just doing a hundred of blackjack on the way out only to lose all my poker winnings plus my buy ins. No sticking a hundred into the video poker machine and then chasing it with several more hundreds to get back the initial hundred, hitting a miracle hand to get back to almost even and then losing it all back because I wanted to leave even. This may be the beginning of beating the degen in me, but then again, Vegas next month...

Im a multiple self crowned moron of the year award winner, but not much experienced in sports betting. I only bet big finals for the sweat - just like I did on bayern munich v chelsea super cup final 2013
100€ on munich - 90mins only.
Chelsea scored early, bayern eventually managed equalize but couldnt follow through and after 90min its overtime and I lost my bet.
3min into overtime chelsea took the lead which lowered my mood sub-zero. I then figured I need to place 100 on no more goal is scored to break even.
120min its 2-2 and I get really pissed.
While watching bayern win the penalties I totally lose it - quick deposit 2k and off to the live roulette table we go.
I calmly watched a few spins to get a feel for the table and then started off with a 10€ bet on red - lost
100€ on red - lost
After that I proceeded martingale myself down to my final 190€ within a few minutes (Im now ready to break ****) - For my last spin choose the 26 as my lucky number and placed 100€ there when I realized I still had 90 left so I put that on a random number during the last seconds of betting time.
Dealer announces:"aaaand the lucky number for this round is 11 black, first dozens, second column - blah blah..."
I hung my head in defeat, credit card is max out.
then suddenly I see 3150€ in my account balance as I managed to randomly put my remaining bucks on 11.

BINK!!! i typed into the chat box with shaking hands "your lucky steve", some fellow degen responded.
Im just bare stupid I thought to myself while initiating the cash out, as I always get myself into troubles chasing small losses.

“If you're going to try, go all the way. Otherwise, don't even start. This could mean losing girlfriends, wives, relatives and maybe even your mind. It could mean not eating for three or four days. It could mean freezing on a park bench. It could mean jail. It could mean derision. It could mean mockery--isolation. Isolation is the gift. All the others are a test of your endurance, of how much you really want to do it. And, you'll do it, despite rejection and the worst odds. And it will be better than anything else you can imagine. If you're going to try, go all the way. There is no other feeling like that. You will be alone with the gods, and the nights will flame with fire. You will ride life straight to perfect laughter. It's the only good fight there is.”
