The setting: Live juicy $2/5 NL Texas Hold'em game on a Saturday night.
Hero's stack: $500. There is a straddle.
UTG+1 limps for $10.
Hero (MP) raises to $75 with AA
BTN calls the $75
SB folds
BB calls the $75
UTG (the straddled calls)
UTG+1 limp/reraises to $280.
BINGO! We got exactly what we wanted. UTG+1 was actually limp/trapping and since we know that player has a super strong hand and that we are going to win their entire stack, we decide to slowplay our AA and just flat call the $280. Moving on...
BTN re-shoves all in, BB goes all in as well and UTG over-cold-calls (!!!
). Of course, UTG+1 calls.
Now we have a situation. We've already put in $280 of our $500 stack in the middle with AA. Some say that we are "pot committed". Let's re-evaluate the situation for a moment.
- Four players. That's right, 4 players have gone all in ahead of us. With our $280 already invested, we are getting $2280 to $220, or roughly 10 to 1 in our call.
HOWEVER, Hero puts at least one of his opponents on an AX type of hand. Now I'm no poker genius but I read somewhere that when you are multiway, you need to hit a set with your big pair hands to have a chance at winning. Since we are putting at least one opponent on an Ace, we have at best one out left to improve. I also read somewhere that hitting a one outter is something like less than 0.2% likely.
Given that we are multiway (5 handed to exact), given that we put at least one opponent on AX, in spite of getting more than 10 to 1 odds on a call, our one pair hand is as good as mush. We are better off using that $220 to purchase lottery tickets.
Hero folds.
The Showdown
The Villains reveal their hands: KK, QQ, AKss, AQhh.
Hero was wrong. Not one, but BOTH of our outs were out of play. Not only that but we are facing two live flush draws, Broadway straight draws, possible royal flushes and since none of the villains had JJ or 10-10, that makes the chances of a Broadway hitting even bigger!
The flop and turn were completely meaningless. But the river (where most Texas Hold'em faiths have been decided) brings the Queen of diamonds. QQ scoops a monster pot and Hero dodges a bullet with a brilliant fold. We save $220.
This calls for a celebration. Some people get married to AA because wow, "Pawcket Rawckets zomg lulz". But folks, at the end of the day, it is just one pair.
