PokerStars was founded by Isai & Mark in 2000 in Canada [Isai worked for IBM there]
On September 11th, 2001 they offered a beta test of their first play money game - a tournament, while still based in Canada
The first real money game was in December 2001 & that's around the time Mark sat up management & support in Costa Rica [San Jose]
