Medium Stakes Book Recommendation? Medium Stakes Book Recommendation?

I played a lot of limit holdem up until about ten years ago. Mostly played 8-16. It was only a hobby, but I took it seriously and played pretty well. I've read many of the 2+2 books published up until then (Small Stakes Holdem was the last poker book I bought) and many others.

I'd like to start playing again as a hobby. Probably the 20-40 and/or 40-80 game. I played a few weeks ago and realized that besides being rusty, I wasn't ready for the medium stakes game (more aggressive opponents, shorthanded play, etc.). But I'm not really interested in playing smaller games than those.

Anyone have book recommendations (2+2 or others) that might help me get up to speed? Especially books published recently? Thanks in advance!

The Intelligent Poker Player (2011) and Further Limit Hold'em (2013) both by Philip Newall might be worth checking out. TIPP doesn't focus exclusively on limit but has an exposition of GTO vs exploitative play, drawing heavily from examples in limit Hold'em. Further Limit Hold'em is a game theory and statistics based study of limit Hold'em. Both are 2+2 books.

An older book that might be worthwhile is Weighing the Odds in Hold'em Poker by King Yao (2005). It is not a 2+2 book.

My answer to this question is going to get a lot of "lol's" on this forum, but **** it: If you're really brand new to moving up in LHE stakes, start with Jennifer Harman's chapter in "Super System 2." It provides the basics. I also really like "Winning in Tough Hold'Em Games: Short-Handed and High-Stakes Concepts and Theory for Limit Hold'em," by Nick "Stoxtrader" Grudzien and Geoff "Zobags" Herzog. That's a 2+2 book, and it's definitely geared more towards high stakes, online, 6-Max play. But imo the concepts are totally worth exposing yourself to and thinking about as you go about moving up in limits (especially when you start playing 40/80 and higher).

Otherwise, the answer is: "Read everything, and assume everyone else has, too." I have dozens of LHE books, and I'm not sorry to have taken the time to have read every single one of them.

I liked the Intelligent Poker Player and Further Limit Holdem, though I think some of the methods he uses to look at the game are misguiding. The section on board texture models is interesting, but an abstraction nonetheless. I'm always a fan of a pretty graph and the books don't disappoint in that regard.

I'm still waiting for a good book on asymmetric game theory.

Lol, my opponents hardly read, aside from a few I can count on one hand. I like the book recommendations though, currently reading Stox, which has a LRR range, which surprised me. Pre-flop is well thought-out with statistics, but I wish the flop play was organized more like the pre-flop play with statistics. Not finished with it yet.
