Hello all,

I read in the forum rules that its safe to pose questions about various books, so even though this isn't a 2+2 book, I hope I'm abiding by the rules here and can get some assistance.

I hope that a few lurkers have this book and can help me out with a few quirks of this book. At this point, I have 2 issues, which I'll list below.

1) In the pre-flop section of the book, there's starting hand ranges which is all fine and good. What drives me nuts about this book, to the point of flipping back to the beginning to make sure I haven't missed anything, is how the authors dont mention what constitutes "weak" or "premium" hands.

For instance, on page 86, the section on unraised pots, the first line is, "With your weaker hands, check and take the free flop."

The next paragraph: "Often raise with good cards".

What are "weak" and/or "good" cards? There's no key that outlines this, and there's no way from deriving this from the charts either. If someone supplies a range of hands and says to play just the "good" ones, without supplying a definition of what "good" is.. should that be the top 10% of the range? the top 15%? Big suited broadway only? AA or KK?

My next issue with the book is the quizzes, or more precisely, the answers to the quizzes. There's numerical values for each option choice, so if there's an "a", "b" or "c" choice, it might say, a-10, b-3, c-1. It's clear that the higher the value, the more "correct" it is, but still, it doesnt add up to 10, so I can't really assume its a percentage based choice.

Those are my issues with this book and it drives me nuts! Any help is much appreciated!

I suggest you put in a bunch of work with an equity calculator to figure this out for yourself. I suggest equilab because it's free and has lots of cool features, but there are many other options.

Just this simple exercise of putting your opponents on ranges and deciding what constitutes a good or bad hand will help you much more than any information we could share with you here.

ps in limped pots when you're in the big blind, there are no bad hands imo. I've checked my option and flopped many monsters in the big blind that I would not get to flop in a tougher game. This is because in tough games, your opponents will not be limping in. In soft games, you get to realize a ton of equity for free. So never think "oh I have 54o in the big blind in a limped pot. that's a bad hand." Nope, it's not.

Author is hedging by not being concrete and using vague language.
