Another spot to do this is when you have the over-pair vs the flush draw, and it's high enough where you're at least even money or slightly ahead vs their range, then it goes 4/5/6, LOL. Then the whole table kind'a starts to tilt and you notice it going to 4 bets frequently pre, and you're like WTF. Simulating tilt can have it's advantages if you don't get sucked-in.
Seriously though against a nit, I had AA and stopped at three so he didn't know what I had, and against stronger players, I stop after they three bet, because it doesn't seem right to re-open the betting again and again revealing what your cards are a little more each time while laying 2-1 (you may get raised).
I remember one recently at 20/40 where I had AA, raised OTB, and nit re-raised and thought he had a likely big pair, stopped at 3 bets, because if I'm 4 betting obv nit, then it's obv I have AA. I flopped quads, and he had KK, and he check-called whole way.
