Sometimes check calling the river is OK? Sometimes check calling the river is OK?

Game is very so-so. Two loose-weak players to my right are helping. I haven't been playing my A-game lately and so my image is loose and maybe aggro spazzy.

Many folds. Button limps (he is a loose weak player who normally plays lower limits)
SB calls.
I check T 6

Flop: 9 7 4

SB Checks, I bet, button calls, SB folds.

Turn: T giving me a pair with backdoor draw on board.
I bet, call.

River: J
I bet, button raises, I fold.

Ewh to flop bet. Bad players will call light getting improper odds. Don't think you have enough immediate odds on the flop bet; prospects on future streets aren't great either. I'd want a stronger read to lead out

That being said, it's a far better method of realizing equity than check calling the flop or check raising the flop against weak opponents.

I'd check fold the river as played. There's the danger of not being paid off, plus the fact that a loose passive dude is never going to turn a 4 or something into a bluff here. Plus, the flush got there, as did the four straight (two things he's at least somewhat likely to have). I don't feel too badly folding here.

i'm often lost on these flops in multiway limped pots. maybe it's just a c/c and hope turn goes check check? idk. i think river is a c/f.

I just noticed that I messed up the suits. Thanks everyone for the responses and help so far.

The flush draw wasn't possible until the T of spades hit on the turn.

So the flop was rainbow? Or running spades?

That obviously makes a small difference regarding b/f versus x/f (I don't think x/c against a passive dude playing higher who limps the BTN is a thing here w/ 2nd pair absent a read), but really, the 8 is way more likely than the flush combinatorically speaking anyway.

Flop was rainbow. Then the backdoor flush draw hit on the river.

It's good to know that you think bet-folding is better then check-calling.

I'm really bad at check-folding, but maybe I should do it more.

I like the hand as played till the river, which I'd check fold.
