Rusty, Is this guy going for the trifecta?

I haven't played very much lately so I'm pretty rusty, plus I was never that good anyway...

PS FR

I open from somewhere in MP w/ 99, BB calls

Flop is J97 w/ 2 hearts

BB checks, I bet, BB c/r, I 3 bet, BB calls.

Turn is offsuit 4

BB checks, I bet, BB c/r's again, I just call(??)

River is an offsuit 6

BB checks, I...

Muck behind without showing?

Wouldn't he have 3-bet preflop with J-J? Wouldn't he have slowplayed a flopped straight? Wouldn't he be afraid of having the turn checked through with a big hand, given that you could be on a draw? I haven't played at all lately, and I was never very good either, but I'm betting here exactly 100% of the time and 3-betting his c/r 99.44%.

What's PS FR? I went to PS 174.

Re: Rusty, Is this guy going for the trifecta?

JJ would 3bet preflop so we could rule out JJ. You are probably worried about the 8,10 for flopped straight but go ahead and 3 bet his C/R on the turn. I think you are missing a lot of value if you just call his C/R. He might have a hand like J9 or J7.

The way you played it, yes go ahead and bet the river 100%.

This is extremely short-sighted and naive, and it's why a lot of people flatcall from OOP when HU and holding a monster. People like you never put us on big hands.

EDIT: I would still 3-bet the turn, though, and expect to get called down by AA a lot of the time.

It's Poker Stars Full Ring, I play that as I can't beat 6 max. Maybe I might be close to break even at Commerce nowadays.

Well then ignore my advice, what I know about PS FR can be comfortably inserted into the eye of a needle with plenty of room left over for Tiger Wood's girlfriends and David Sklansky's ego.

Re: Rusty, Is this guy going for the trifecta?

I'd just threebet the turn. My guess is that his range looks something like JJ, 77, J7, T8, AJ (d), KJ (d), J4s (d), AA, KK, QQ, random draws (d)

3-bet turn. As played, definitely bet river.

Joker--

The extra money you make from "people like us" is more than made up for by the money you lose preflop.

Barry--

I'd definitely bet the river.

All my best,

Re: Rusty, Is this guy going for the trifecta?

After flat calling the turn c/r there's no way he suspects your hand is a set. I'd fall for his "trap" and let him c/r one more time. But of course the standard thing to do is 3-bet and probably call down a cap.

We'll have to agree to disagree! I used to be in the "don't flat PF HU OOP" camp like you, but then experimented with it and really liked the results in live play. There are dozens of threads ongoing about this (one in High Stakes too) where it's been debated back and forth, but basically while I think many online players are good enough to exploit the "always flat" club (which is why I 3-bet online), I think that with live play, a) the sample size vs. specific opponents is too small; and b) the opponents aren't good enough to adjust quickly enough, and so the "always flat" club will make more money (which is why I like flatting everything HU PF OOP).

Re: Rusty, Is this guy going for the trifecta?

Nate,

Could you give me a situation in a narrowish range spot, like this, where we lose value by not threebetting preflop with against a TAG?

What limits are we talking about? It certainly matters.
