I feel like lots of people do this and I don't really have a problem with it. I frequently will ask other reg-friends "what do you think of XYZ's game?" and sometimes XYZ is a winning reg, other times it's a loser, sometimes it's someone who maybe wins or loses a little and I'm just curious if they think they're winning.
Occasionally I'll get a response like "well, they never check-raise bluff the turn" or something. Sometimes I know the response to be incorrect, other times they're spot on. I don't think discussing other players in the game away from the table is unethical at all.
Sometimes it'll even be a learning situation. Pre- Black Friday online I might talk to a friend about a player we both thought was very very solid and we'd look at their stats and compare to our own and think "what makes this person such a crusher?" I don't think there's anything wrong with that.
