Live 20-40 JJ, surely I could have done something better

I play a pretty LAG style, and I've been playing a lot of hands in the prior 15 min, so I'm looking particularly spewy at the moment.

We're 9 handed and it's folded to me at UTG + 1, I open JJ. UTG + 2 3-bets. This guy is extremely loose and plays poorly post flop (mostly he's too aggressive). UTG +3 (a random) calls, folded to me and I cap at 4 bets. They call.

Flop
AT8
I bet, both call

Turn
Q
I check, both check

Standard? Should I have checked the flop? Should I have bet the turn since I picked up a double gutter and was not raised on the flop? What sort of range do we assign to a random who takes three to the face?

If you play with somebody for an hour you can quickly determine (roughly) their TTTD (three to the dome) ranges. Like this one guy I play with, it's literally 99-JJ, AQo. That's exactly it. For others it could include 43s, but given that you have no reason to think this guy is horrifically bad I'd assume he has an "easily describable" hand.

I think I like the check here because "pocket pictures" is easily describable, and you just lost to every single combo of that class of hands. Betting can't be too bad since you're double gutted, but I think you're probably behind and checking to call one bet is probably the best course of action.

However now the river is just a disaster

Grunch

Yeah I'd bet OTF for balance reasons but really what's the point only better hands are calling right

Ott I think you're really smoked here. But by checking here ott you really are giving up on the hand. You still really cant even call from the lagtard sitting on your immediate left even if he bets otr assuming a blank hits the river you beat 66 77 99 and KT JT mb T9 and everything else AK AQ AJ AT KJ KQ QJ QT AA KK QQ TT blah blah blah you get the point .... but at game speed I might just call a bet from him and not the other Guy not sure how bad I'd be playing at that moment LOL!

I love the check. You have the best hand only a negligible amount of the time, ~ 8 outs to improve to a winner, and very little fold equity against better hands. You will also pay 2 bets quite a bit of the time if you end up betting the turn, and you may get a free card sometimes if you check. Altogether, seems like a pretty easy check.

Don't pay off UI, obviously.

Pretty easy turn check imo. Honestly it seems completely ridiculous to bet it.

OK, so I think we're on agreement on the turn. Any thoughts about not c-betting the flop. I'm assuming the only two reasonable lines on the flop are bet/fold or check/fold? Anyone do anything else? And why is bet/fold superior to check/fold?

The flop isn't great, but given the wider ranges due to your image, and the cold 3bet's often being weighted away from aces and toward PP, I don't think your equity is so bad you need c/f.

I think we have to B/C the flop (if we bet,) your getting 16-1 (or more depending on action) with 2 set outs and a BDSD.
