I witnessed a hand the other day that is still making my head spin.

It was like a 6-way raised pot, and the flop was K67. Villain 1 bet from EP, Villain 2 (SB) called after a few others. Turn was a 6. Villain 2 checkraises the field. Villain 1 calls. River J. Villain 2 bets, Villain 1 calls. Villain 2 turns over a 6 (whatever, like 65 or A6 can't remember) and Villain 1 shows KK.

There was the requisite period of silence where the rest of the table stared at the showdown and gulped in wtf, then the guy with KK sort of suspected he was going to be accused of being too weak so he made some half-hearted explanation of why the other guy should have had 66. It was insane.

Once in a while, the veil lifts, and I can see clearly for a moment or two.

Commerce 40-80 Table had been not-so-good, but a bunch of loose gamblers have just sat down. Chief villain has been at this table longer than I have, rather nitty TAGfish, prone to checking the river with less than a monster.

EP, villain in MP, and LP limp -- that's an excellent sign that the game's getting better. I'm in the small blind with 7c2c, and I complete. Big blind (only other really good player at the table) checks. Five people see the , five small bets in the pot before the drop.

Flop: K Q 7

I check, BB checks, EP checks. villain bets, LP calls, I call, BB folds, EP calls. Four players see turn; 4 1/2 big bets in the pot.

Turn: KQ7 3

I've picked up a flush draw to go with my no-longer-bottom pair. The action is checked around, which surprises me.

Turn: KQ73 Q

I decide that betting is foolish, so I check. EP checks, villain bets, LP folds.

The situation seems off to me. The villain is the sort of player who wouldn't bet a Q on the flop unless it were folded to him on the button. If he'd had a K, he would have bet the turn and checked the scary river. Therefore there was a very good chance he had nothing. I called. Player after me folds. Villain shows offsuit JT for a missed straight draw, and my hand is good.

I dunno, but that hand seems super-standard to me.

Not a huge wine drinker, but I just paid $165 for a bottle of this locally produced wine that's going to be released in March. Apparently, the waitlist is pretty long, but their releases have gotten really good ratings.

2009 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley

Vintage Notes:
Winemakers: Paul Golitzin, Marv Crum, Alex Golitzin
Varietals: 98% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Merlot
Vineyards: Champoux, Klipsun, Palengat, Tapteil
Barrels: 100% New French Oak
Time in Barrel: 22 months
Bottled: August 2011

Winemaker's comments
Our next private release is the highly anticipated 2009 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley in January 2012. Over the last ten years this Cabernet Sauvignon has received an average score of 98.8 points from Wine Advocate. No other wine in the world has ever achieved such consistently high accolades for Cabernet Sauvignon. Here is what the Wine Advocate has to say about the 2009:
"They [the Golitzin's] are considerably more excited by the 2009 vintage which they describe as 'wines with tons of aroma - really good' which, given their understated manner, I interpret to mean really terrific. For this tasting, the 2009's were all tasted from barrel samples. The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley might, in the long run, prove to be an even higher level [than the 2008 - 99 pts]. This beautifully proportioned, fragrant Cabernet deftly combines elegance and power." Barrel Sample: 99-100 pts.
Jay Miller, Wine Advocate #196, August 2011.
The 2009 growing season started with a one week late bud break, but the weather remained warm and veraison occurred on time. August and September were hot and dry, easily ripening the small, loose clusters. The berry diameter was incredibly small and all of the fruit was harvested at optimal physiological maturity.
Winemaker Paul Golitzin describes the resulting 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon as graced with layers of blackberry, plum and cassis fruit with complex floral nuances of violets, star anise, dark chocolate and Asian spices. The wine has an amazing texture and depth while maintaining great purity, elegance, and focus. Anticipated Maturity: 2015-2029.

Do you live in WA state? I know one of the vineyard owners, the Champoux's. We attended the same college and play golf together. They are a very good grower. Such a small world...

If it helps anyone, my employer(City of Los Angeles) will be issuing a civil service test for entry level positions starting in late Feb or early March. The classification is called Managment Assistant.

The one and only requirement to take the test is that you have a 4 year college degree(any major is ok). Some of the jobs you will eventually interview for might have more stringent job requirements.

Job starts at ~45-50K, 5% raise after the first six months and then each year for 3 years after that. Pretty easy to promote into positions paying up to ~$85K. Possible but more difficult to promote into positions paying $95-120K. 13 holidays a year, 12 sick days, 2 weeks vacation to start, retirement, health care, dental, I forget what else right now.

You take the civil service exam. Its pass/fail and they use a scale because thousands take this particular test. If you pass, you get an interview and are assigned a score based on the interview. A list starting with the highest scores is sent to all city departments, who can then set up interviews for openings they have. They have to interview the highest scores available first.

Anyway, its an option for anyone tired of full time poker, anyone looking to get away from jobs demanding lots of hours, or for an older person looking to work 10-15 years and have something as a retirement.

At one time I had a city job that was incredible for playing poker at Commerce. I worked 10 hours a day, four days a week. On Thursdays I'd go home and crash from around 5-10pm, then head down to Commerce until 3-4 am, rinse wash repeat Friday and Saturday nights. Sundays on holiday weekends(LOL Columbus Day & Cesar Chavez Day). I wish I lived in Downtown at the time like I do now because Commerce is very close.

Anyway, website is http://agency.governmentjobs.com/lacity/default.cfm The job posting will show up a week or two before the filing opens.

Not sure how many jobs are available during the next two years(the list is active for two years) due to city budget issues. But in the past there has been several hundred hired off each exam. The Management Analyst Class has several thousand employees.

If anyone wants more info, just ask. I don't check in here every day lately so you may want to pm that you asked a question so I know to look for it.

I just realized I've been wearing my pants backwards for the past two hours.

1. Yes I will dodge ms rocks by playing the 60, if sailboats hasn't taken all the money by tomorrow morning. Big if there so I dunno could be 20 for me. Also yes, any 60 I am in is amazing for at least two reasons.

2. Doug horse of the year really is all but locked up on 2/2, there is simply no chance you can win without doing something incredibly drastic.

3. I echo sentiments that scoring 400 points on a WWF game means you're just kind of good at it. Babar and I have played some legendary games with (I believe) total points passing the 1000 mark.

Babar came to my place of employment yesterday for the first time and needed a player's card. I walked him to the desk and asked the woman for him and she's like "you need to fill out one of these" and points at the big honking "Player's Card Application" form that was right there and I leave him to it. After I leave she tells him in a hushed tone:

"I don't think I've ever seen him wear shoes"

Confirm hoodie, a pair of jeans and sneakers would be considered an upgrade to your wardrobe.

To be fair he hasn't worn pants in my presence since I met him over a year ago. And it's not just because I'm such a handsome man.

I walked up to someone yesterday at Commerce that I suspected was 2+2'er. My greeting was "Do you know the big green elephant?" He said yes.

Also, met AlanBostick. It's been a good week (except for 2 rack loss in the 20 last night).

That's actually a larger part of my reasoning than you'd expect.

I don't particularly disagree.

However, its not like the wolves are pounding at the doors to get these jobs.

During the "buildup" or whatever you want to call it from about 2001-2007, they had to offer this test every six months and still couldn't hire enough people to fill all the jobs.

For the entry level office position..."Clerk Typist"(which pays up to ~$55-$65K after one promotion to "Sr. Clerk Typist and has NO job requirements other than to be breathing...no joke, theres no job requirements), the City continually offered that test for 6 years or so..a few times a week. And could not hire enough people.

So I dunno.....even now, lots of people will take the civil service test. But lots of them decline positions when offered a job. Especially if they find out they have to work an off watch or weekends or whatever. It's not like theres some mass of people clamoring to do these jobs.
